Mercedes VS Volvo
Hello everybody,

So I'm thinking about buying my first Truck (new savegame). I used to take the Volvo because of its 750hp and looks. But now i want to take the New Actros, Mercedes, which got a max. hp of 625. Is that difference anything big or would i get any "problems" when carrying heavy loads with 125hp less?

Thanks in advance! :)

in the real world then its unlikely you would have anything above 500hp because that is usually enough and better for fuel consumption. In the game tho it doesnt rally matter. If you are carrying loads below 40-50 tonnes then the 625hp engine would be enough. More than that the the 750hp would be better. Most engine can pull loads of up to appoximatly 100-150 tonnes. The power wont really affect the ability but it will make it easier to accerate to the speed limit. Your gearbox ratios will make the biggest difference with heavy loads. Try to pick the shortest one. Hope this helps

Yes it's les power, but *honestly* it's not like I really noticed the upgrade to the 750hp engine in the volvo, it was already a beast lol. The merc gets 3000Nm of torque out of that engine - you'll be fine :) Then again, when I used simple auto transmission in my volvo even the 750HP one got stuck trying to pull an 18t load out the quarry lol! Switched it to sequential, shot out of there like a champagne cork!

Ultimately it's only usually the lower powered "entry teir" trucks that are really annoying, most anything mid level in terms of config seems to be fine. You're feeling like the merc- get the merc, no point getting anything but your heart's desire lol; you'll be driving it a little while!

Also some people were reporting that the last update caused a cruise control issue on the Volvo using the 750Hp engine and alison R transmission, I haven't checked on that in a week or so though.

Horse power isn't as important as torque when it comes to heavy loads. If you compare the lbs of Torque per hp, you will find that the best truck is DAF.

But if you look at real life companies, most of them use middle range engines (better torque tro hp ratios than the bigger hp engines in general) and mostly Merc, DAF, and MAN trucks. Admittedly IRL there are dedicated engines for heavy hauls that are not in game currently (I'm hoping some get added with the oversized trailers)

Merc 1858 engine = 4.84 t/hp
Merc 1863 engine = 4.80 t/hp
Scania 730hp = 4.79 t/hp
Volvo 750hp = 4.733 t/hp

So although the Scania/Volvo is "faster" it has worse torque per HP. But then you don't pick a engine for speed when heavy hauling. It's not about being the fastest afterall.

Volvo are the best
the Benz is nice... it´s my most used truck...pulls it´s weight and doesn´t feel so overpowered... well, at least Volvos and Scanias do for me, because i drove trucks in RL and i know that you usually won´t have such big engines in "normal duty"... the 750 is a heavy cargo engine (normally) , just too much for the cargoes you pull in this game (without mods that is)

well how ever, to each their own, i like my Benz :)

I have never looked at the DAF's before because of their low engine but I looked at exclusive interior design (the one you unlock at ~lvl 12) and I LOVE that look with the steering wheel, although some might think it looks too much like a toy truck ^^. I've decided to go with the DAF now and got me a mod that gives every brand the 750hp Volvo engine, so that concern would be out of the way for me anyways ^^

Interesting to hear others perspective - I use DAF 105's as my fleet truck basically because I think outside and in they look the business. I drove one of them for a couple thousand K's and honestly no problem with the standard engines as far as I was concerned - plenty of power.

For me, I don't own one in my personal garages just because I don't really enjoy driving them. There's nothing to dislike in handling or power or anything like that... they're just a bit... 'meh'. But that's personal taste for you!

I like both, Actros and the Volvo.
At the moment I´m driving the Actros because I like the Interieur more than inside the Volvo.
In the future I want to switch to smaller engines around 500hp like nearly every truck on the Autobahn because of a little more challenge and realism.

I really hope that the new Iveco Stralis HiWay will find the way into the game one day. Iveco really learned a lot over the last years. Nice truck.

Hasn't the HiWay been in the game for a long time already? This is an old truck one of my drivers is tootling around in:

It´s the old version. The new one is a big step forward.

Have a look at "Stralis XP" with Google. Nice truck.
