My Fix for Fatal D3D error 24, DXGI ERROR DEVICE REMOVED, 0x887a0005, DeviceRemovedReason 0x887a0006
This is a document chaptering my 1 week journey, everything I've tried up till I've fixing Fatal D3D, I will include links, reference, quote, but also repeat some of the things they've mentioned too, I am by no means an expert and you should also DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH.

If you are running an AMD GPU or Linux OS, take it with a grain of salt and I hope you can find your own solutions based on my case study.

I'm going to be honest and say: NOTHING FFROM CHAPTER 1-3 WORKED for me, but I believed they did partially make a difference (system updates, removing overlays and bloatware). The actual fix for me is at CHAPTER 4 which involves tweaking my BIOS which if you have not exhausted your options and are not tech-savy. DO NOT JUMP HEAD FIRST INTO IT.

As a prefatory note:

I WILL NOT REPLY TO THIS THREAD AND HELP ANYONE. Learn from this and find your own solutions.

My Situation:

Constantly and/or consistent crashing either during loading screen, idling, less than 2~3mins into game, when my fishing net touches the water, mid hunt, end of hunt. It was a miracle to even get 30mins of consistent game time without crashing.

My benchmark for a fix was to actively play MHWilds at least 6hours non-stop, idling does not count, although I do crash while idling. And today, I have yet to crash for 12hrs.

My specs:

CPU: 5600X

GPU: Asus Tuf gaming 3060 Ti OC (8gb vram)

RAM: DDR4, 3600Mhz

Mobo: Rog Strix X570-E Gaming

OS: Windows 11 25h2 (latest - last last resort to reinstall your entire OS and everything on your pc)

------

As a base note, if you are reading this message you should know that MHWilds is poorly optimised for PC, whether or not you run a high end spec you may still get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ for it. And note at this point... To get it to FUNCTION on a baseline, this game is more CPU intensive.

Additionally, if you "ALWAYS" crash on the startup load screen, press Ctrl F and search for config.ini in this post.

------

What is [Fatal D3D error (24, DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED, 0x887a0005) DeviceRemovedReason(0x887a0006)]

Quote: Thge error signifies that a game or application lost connection to the graphics card (GPU), often caused by unstable drivers, overheating, overclocking, or intense GPU load, particularly with DirectX 12, frequently appearing in Capcom RE Engine games.

If you have no idea how to tune your GPU on Afterburner, then don't touch it.

Troubleshoot your problems chapter by chapter.

------ [ Chapter 1 - Proper installation, Permissions, conflicting software] ------

Basic Troubleshooting (You should've at least tried this on a fundamental level):

https://steamcommunity.com/app/2246340/discussions/0/596267902352499612/

[Ensure proper installation and permisions]

1 - Open Steam > Right Click Monster Hunter Wilds > Installed Files > Verify Integrity of game files

2 - Delete High Resolution Texture Pack (my system can't support, 16gb vram)

3a - Open Steam > Right Click Monster Hunter Wilds > Manage > Browse Local Files > Right Click on MonsterHunterWilds.exe > Compatability > Run as admin > ok

3b - In the same tab, untick “Run this program in compatibility mode for:”

4 - Allowed through your firewall

[Ensure no conflicting software/overlays]

~My Synapse and Corsair iCue are disabled by default, but I was still crashing with them on.

1 Nvidia - Bottom right of taskbar click arrow > Right click Nvidia and open Nvidia App > Settings > Features > TURN OFF EVERYTHING

2 Steam - In steam, click on steam icon on top left corner > Settings > In-Game > TURN OFF EVERYTHING OVERLAY RELATED

3 MS Gamebar - Follow this link up till 2.03 ONLY: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NubyQsp2MfE

4 Asus Armoury Crate***:

a - Download https://www.revouninstaller.com/revo-uninstaller-free-download/ (it helps cleanup residual files aside from just uninstalling)

b - Download uninstaller https://armoury-crate.com/#download

c - Once AC uninstaller is downloaded, use Revo to uninstall anything with an armoury crate logo regardless of the name (DO NOT CREATE A RESTORE POINT), keep clicking select all and delete (Revo will utilise AC Uninstaller to properly remove software, so revo will followup by cleaning the residues) "AC service, Framework service, motherboard, VGA, etc.."

d - Run armoury crate uninstaller (check task manager and ensure that all armoury crate is closed in the background, ♥♥♥♥ is so invasive)

5 Windows itself - Settings > System > Display > Graphics

Enable "Optimizations for windowed games" & "Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling" under Advanced graphics settings

Under "Custom settings for applications", find Wilds and settings should be on

GPU Preference: Let windows decide (High performance)

Optimizations for windowed games "on"

------ [Chapter 2 - Up to Date Drivers] ------

[Checking your graphic drivers]

Caveat ~ I've tried all the versions from 572.83 (recommended by NeoX on steam), but im using 581.57 - Something another 5600x & 3060ti user was stably using. Tbh.... I think it doesn't matter as much, just use the latest version

I heard AMD needs to downgrade so just do your own research.

Proper procedure:

1 - Install: https://www.guru3d.com/download/display-driver-uninstaller-download/

2 - Open DDU (skip stupid notifications), click on "Clean and Restart"

3 - Install latest Nvidia driver - https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/

When installing > Custom (Advanced) > Tick everything & perform a clean installation

Note: remember to turn off overlays again in nvidia app

4 - Install https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35

[Checking your CPU Drivers]

1- Install and ensure it updated https://www.amd.com/en/support/download/drivers.html

[Checking your Mother board]

1 - Download latest bios from manufacturer into a thumbdrive, mine for example:

https://rog.asus.com/sg/motherboards/rog-strix/rog-strix-x570-e-gaming-model/helpdesk_bios/

2 - Go google how to update your bios from your mobo manufacturer

Bonus if you are on Asus, go to Tools > Asus Armoury Crate > Disable it from trying to auto install

----- [Chapter 3 - Power Settings & Your settings surpasses the load of your hardware] -----
By now, if you are still unable to "CONSISTENTLY" make it past the loading screen" download this config.ini file by NeoX, it is basically your settings configuration.

https://www.file-upload.net/en/download-15568925/config.ini.html

Alternatively, reinstall the game and adjust all settings to a minimum

------

If you are consistently crashing in-game, it's probably a settings : hardware issue at this point, and you start following the processes below. The load on your PC as a whole to render everyframe is constantly fluctuating, so it is best to have good power consistency.

------

Windows Power Options:

a. Windows > Control panel >Hardware and Sound > Power Options

Enable High Performance

b. Under High Performance, click "Change Plan settings" > Change advanced power settings > PCI Express > Ensure Link State Power Management Setting: Off

What it does turning it "off" do: Doesn't allow your PCIe (GPU) power lane to go into standby, meaning it gets consistent power, improving latency.

Nvidia Control Panel

a. 3D Settings > Adjust imagine settings with preview > Tick Use the advanced 3D image settings

b. 3D Settings > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings (scroll all the way down) > Power management Mode (Pref maximum performance)
------

Shader Cache - Credits to NeoX

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3490758455

If you missed it, if your GPU have less than 12gb of vram, either keep "Shader Cache Size" to value under your VRAM or keep it disabled
------

[In-Game Settings] * marks importance level

My settings are a reference of what you should tune down first, no harm going lower... you can slowly improve each setting as you go along. I'll note anything significant.

[Registry edit: Allowing the game abit more time to try render before forcefully crashing]

a. TdrDelay - determines how many seconds the operating system waits for the graphics card (GPU) to respond before assuming it has frozen and resetting it.]

b. TdrDdiDelay - specifies the number of seconds the OS allows graphics driver threads to remain active before forcing a reset.]

Watch and listen till 1.38 https://youtu.be/Vejhv9QmNGM (tbh idk why or how, but it seems like it worked for some people)

Remeber to restart your PC after doing this.

Just set value to 10. If your game freezes but doesn't crash great! If not, delete both and restart your PC and windows will revert to the default 2s timeout

------

[Undoing any form of OC]

I have MSI afterburner, and I basically never adjusting a single setting in here... If you've some setting going on, reset to default and save it.

Task Manager > Startup apps >Disable MSI Afterburner from running on startup.

Try again.

Note for MSI: TBH first thing I did was use MSIAB to reduce "Clock Core (MHz)" by -100, afterwards tried to reduce power limit and both, but I have no idea what I was doing, and it doesnt even seem like anything worked. So I'll skip this part... It is unlikely the problem anyway... But moving forward**, DO NOT ADJUST ANY CLOCK SETTINGS**

------ [ Chapter 4 - Overall system instability, because of how MHWilds is optimised] -----

If you are here, I guess you've either not read the above or exhausted all the options, so it is now time for technical Jargon and adjust of system BIOS...

As a refresher of what is the problem Ctrl F: What is [Fatal D3D error (24, DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED, 0x887a0005) DeviceRemovedReason(0x887a0006)]

Here are my Bios Settings which ultimately fixed all the instability issues and I will try to explain the reason for every change. And it all comes down to wanting everything to run in a consistent manner. Please figure out how to save a BIOS profile, and save your current setting elsewhere. Save these onto a clean profile

[AI Tweaker]

1 - AI Overclock Tuner - D.O.C.P. (It'll tweak all the other settings automatically)

2 - Memory Frequency - 3200Mhz (my ram supports 3600, so it automatically pushes it to 3600. But AMD already said that it limits up to 3200Mhz, so pushing it further will destabilisation)

https://www.amd.com/en/products/processors/desktops/ryzen/5000-series/amd-ryzen-5-5600x.html

[Advanced]

1 - AMD CBS > CPU Power Management - Global C-State Control - Change to Auto/Disable works (I'm on auto)

Global C-State Control is a BIOS setting, often found on AMD Ryzen systems, that manages CPU power-saving modes during idle times. Enabling it saves power by allowing the CPU to sleep. Disabling it can improve system stability, reduce random freezes, or lower input latency at the expense of higher power usage.

2 - Onboard Devices Configuration - PCIEX16_1 > Select Gen 4 (If you're more overspec'ed than me, you may be a gen5 etc...)

PCIEX16_1 in BIOS refers to the first or top-most PCI Express x16 slot on your motherboard, designed for high-performance graphics cards (GPUs). It provides 16 data lanes for direct communication with the CPU, making it the preferred slot for your primary GPU to ensure maximum bandwidth, speed, and stability.

https://www.kingston.com/en/blog/pc-performance/pcie-gen-4-explained#:~:text=PCIe%204.0%20platforms%20allow%20for,optimizing%20boot%20load%20up%20time.

3 - Onboard Devices Configuration - CPU PCIE ASPM Control > Select Disable

CPU PCIe ASPM (Active State Power Management) Control is a BIOS/UEFI setting that manages power saving for PCIe links connected directly to the CPU, such as NVMe drives or GPUs. It enables lower power consumption by putting links into idle states (L0s/L1) when not in use, which can reduce heat, but may cause slight latency.

4 - PCI Subsystem Settings - Above 4G Coding > Select Enable

Above 4G decoding allows the firmware to map memory regions of PCI devices (your GPU) above 4GB of memory. This setting is off by default for compatibility with OSes that do not support 64bit or PAE addressing.
TLDR lets your GPU EFFICIENTLY use more than 4gb of its VRAM

5 - PCI Subsystem Settings - Resizable BAR support (appears after u enable 4g coding) > Select Enable

Enables the CPU to access the entire graphics card (GPU) memory at once, rather than in limited 256MB chunks. This reduces data transfer bottlenecks, leading to smoother gameplay and higher FPS in supported games. It often requires Enabling "Above 4G Decoding"

6 - AMD CBS > NBIO Common Options > SMU Common Options > DF C-States > Set Disable

DF C-states (Data Fabric C-states) in BIOS is an AMD-specific power-saving setting that allows the CPU's Infinity Fabric (the interconnect between chiplets) to enter a low-power "sleep" state when idle. Disabling it reduces latency and improves system responsiveness by keeping the fabric active, which is useful for overclocking or reducing micro-stutters, though it increases idle power consumption.

Other things you may want to note:

[Advanced]

1 - AMD CBS > NBIO Common Options > SMU Common Options > CPPC > Set to Enabled/Auto

2 - AMD CBS > NBIO Common Options > SMU Common Options > CPPC Preferred Cores> Set to Enabled/Auto

CPPC (Collaborative Processor Performance Control) in BIOS is an AMD technology that allows the operating system (like Windows 11) to manage CPU core performance, enabling faster, more efficient power and speed adjustments. It explicitly tells the OS which CPU cores are the fastest ("preferred cores") to optimize performance for demanding tasks.

Edit:** TLDR: if you enable it, it makes your best cores work harder, but both you and I dont know how the game is coded to work, so don't force it and let it automatically decide. But by technicality, enabling "preferred cores" lets the best cores, maximising the core's output *end of edit

I quite literally googled all the BIOS settings on a surface level. I may be wrong, but im just quoting people. I'm not an engineer nor expert. If anyone is more knowledgeable feel free to comment and correct me to help other readers.

----- [Chapter 5 - If all else fails, your windows may have issues] ------

If all else fails, reinstall your entire windows (I did windows 11) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Sd2io3RVy4

And runthrough the whole procedure again. (I did this twice before the bios things so I yeah that was dumb of me.)

Special thanks to:
NeoX (Steam) https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197991011140

Shibe (Steam) https://steamcommunity.com/id/TacticalWombat

For giving me a direction to follow, and all the reddit and youtube sources, for teaching me ♥♥♥♥ i dont know.

And especially to capcom who after taking my money told me to screw myself and it was a "me problem" with no timeline on when the game will be optimised again. Wouldn't have tried to solve it if it wasn't for such examplary service.

Love the dev team, amazing game, but fk customer support

Hope this helps.
This should be put into Wilds game guide for future references.
amazing guide, thank you for taking the time to do all of this.
this guide is fantastic, it explains every step in a way even unexperienced users can understand, great work

This game was made with REngine NOT UNREAL 5 they are not the same and might as well be useless to fix the aformentioned issue.

https://steamdb.info/tech/Engine/RE_Engine/
If it’s a D3D error it’s coming from DirectX and applies to all games using it, which is pretty much everything modern unless you use Vulkan.

Also, didn’t realise I got a shoutout lol, I’ve kinda moved on to Resident Evil games while waiting for MH expansion.

Edit: for AMD CPPC setting depends on which CPU you have. While enabling it does schedule threads on most performant cores it can cause the core to be loaded too much, windows and anything else will get scheduled on them too and can be a cause for (minor) stuttering.

For non-multi ccd cpus you can leave it disabled, for multi ccd cpus leave it enabled and/or override thread scheduler to move everything else to non-performant cores so the game has full use.
It's interesting how I have similar specs to yours (RAM, GPU, CPU, except motherboard, B550 gaming) including directx 12... yet I'm on Windows 10 and haven't had any issues. I haven't even had to touch much in the way of settings except in game. That said, I am not in any way shape or form bragging. I'm just as confused and frustrated as you are. How is my system working when other similar systems are having issues? I'm not an expert by any means so I'm clueless as to everything involving this.

The one thing I can say is I haven't updated my drivers as I'm of the old habit of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I haven't had any reason to update drivers yet (most recent was from 2 months ago) from what I've been reading and the games I currently have and which ones being updated, but I'm sure that'll change.

I AM going to bookmark this though, just in case as it's an interesting read. Thank you for your due diligence and research. Great guide!
