New player to the franchise and i'm confused
Maybe it's because it's just a beta but as someone new, how the hell am i supposed to learn the movesets of weapons?
What confuses me the most is that some combos use buttons that are used for inventory or to sheathe your weapon... I tried the longsword and once it's fully charged i can do the anime jump attack, then i found out i can do an extra special attack if i press RT and X but X is used to sheathe the weapon so sometimes instead of attacking i just put the weapon away. Surely i'm doing something wrong

I recommend watching videos on youtube
There are a multitude of combinations. Especially if you have to hold a other button.
Yes this is complex and very much its own thing. But usually each monster hunter comes with the guide book to look up like everything.

I think here they even have videos in it to show the stuff. And there is the training location.
I very much despise the menus. The controls are a mainstay and are basically unaltered between games for the most part.
Inside the village is a training area.

Go in there and bonk stuff until you bonk stuff good.

The first little secret to memorizing and learning the controls of the weapons is that the majority of weapons controls come from back on the PS2 and the PSP and in that game you used triangle and circle and R exclusively for weapon controls. They've been very careful to not add too many more buttons so once you realize that there are some universal controls and that's actually makes up the majority of controls and the actual attacks are the minority of controls then it starts to make a little more sense. That said there's the moves that are related to the direction when you push one of those buttons too so a lot of people tend to not learn every weapon but learn one or two of them and Capcom tries to find ways to make people learn more but just like trying to learn the whole roster of street fighter which is another game they make it ain't going to happen unless you actually sit down and fight every monster with every weapon. That said it's usually good enough for most weapons for like when you have to use the arena which restricts the weapons you can choose from it's usually enough to learn the bread and butter combos of a weapon. In fact even if something's your main weapon odds are you're not going to use The more complex attacks because well some of the stuff is just so obscure you think you'll never use it until somebody finds a way to exploit it. Classic example of this is that the bow has a wall run and wall jump attack that is insanely exploitable or at least it was in monster Hunter world where it was used the most. Even then it was only used in a certain arena quest. Now you can unintentionally use some of these moves as well and this is I think were more of their purpose is: you will sometimes accidentally pull off moves that make sense whenever you try to do something like for example whenever you are close to a wall you might accidentally wall run while your weapon is away and discover the attack that way and it might work out for you because you panic shoot because of monsters coming at you as you are like trying to dodge roll into a wall and that turns into a wall run which in turns into that attack which has a high chance of helping you out by staggering the monster and then you know you'll probably never do it again but it ends up helping you a lot even though you never intended to use it. And that's just one example.

And sorry for the wall and maybe some typos because I'm using speech to text cuz I'm sitting in my car about to get it into my house after work and I don't feel like standing up quite yet cuz my feet hurt.

as a veteran monster hunter player, that came from monster hunter 1, 2, freedom unite and then jumped into world, rise and now wilds

it is hard to learn the combos just from playing

there are good tips on the weapon guides on the menu, shows a lot of combos and things you may not get just doing the stuff

if you pay attention to the top right side of the screen, shows what buttons are used for follow ups for each attack, a good way is to use the training area for that

and also, monster hunter is a game about a community, hunting together, don't be afraid to ask people in the lobby

also there are good content creators that make video guides for each weapon that help a lot

from freedom unite on the psp, to monster hunter world on pc, were added a lot of weapons that i never saw, like the charge blade, switch axe, and insect glaive

i had to watch videos on the charge blade to learn how to proper use that weapon, and felt in love with it

a lot of stuff changed from world to wilds, and i had to watch some videos and pratice in the training room a bit to understand the changes

took me 2 beta tests to understand how to do the weeb explosion attack on the switch axe on wilds XD

Watch youtube videos explaining the combos, or just hit the training dummy until you get the gist of it.

Go to the training area and then you will be presented with a few basic combos you can practice and if you open the guide book in the menu and select your weapon, you can also find pretty much all the combos you need to know in there. I recommend playing around with different weapons a bit until you find one that clicks. Each weapon provides a totally different experience.
The game is about getting to know the flow of a certain weapon combo, how long it leaves you vulnerable and how it sometimes repositions your character when doing it. It's also, like souls games for example, about learning the monster's attack patterns and well timed dodges. This just comes naturally by slaying monsters over and over again. After a while it becomes muscle memory and you don't think about the inputs anymore. The game take it step by step anyway, it'll start you off with very easy monsters. But my advice is to not just try and spam hits on them. Look for how they move and what their patterns are and when they leave themselves vulnerable.

I did use the training thing a lot but the combos on the top right last a split second so hard to see.
I hate having to go outside the game to learn the game, i played all kinds of hardcore games and having to use the community is just a failure of the devs imo

I'll have to check, i tried looking for it ingame but couldn't find it, the UI and menus are very asian coded which i'm trying not to say just "bad".
Youtube. I know it's absurd but Japan is deeply rooted in the backwards traditions and they don't plan to change it anytime soon. I mean they still hunt whales and dolphins and their women have their own separate section in public transports. ♥♥♥♥ is ♥♥♥♥ no matter how hard you attempt to embellish it
