Is the gameplay supposed to feel like that? Feeling off?
Disclaimer, I'm a total noob to this franchise. It's my first time playing this.
I'm playing this on console with a controller.

The combat system so far has been extremely daunting to me.
There's a dozen weapon types, and all are different, but it's not well explained what are the pros and cons of each, and why to use them. You're just handed them.

But my main gripe is...Isn't the combat and controls somewhat clunky?
The entire thing where controls change when you sheathe/unsheathe the weapon and also on focus mode, and also how you have attacks that can only be triggered by R2...It's weirdly confusing. Also hate how the Seikret is just running around on these predetermined paths.

I feel like the game should tutorialise the combat system way more.
I come from souls games and literally feel that I get more preparation playing those games than this game.

I honestly hope that the final game, before it drops you in a massive zone, gives you smaller piecemeal zones where you can actually learn the game. And also point beginners to what weapons are good for beginners.

Finally, the balance between weapons is completely BROKEN?
Like the sword and shield feel completely ridiculous compared to the gunlance which just obliterates enemies and can literally block then shoot a bunch of high powered bullets?

From what I hear almost the entire main low rank part of the story is basically a big tutorial and it's very accommodating for new players and it goes on for a while slowly teaching the player the mechanics.
Plus in the full release there will most likely be a training area and arena place that will allow you to truly test and learn about your weapons with a actual tutorial.
1. Yes the combat is very clunky, although probably not in the way you describing, what your describing i imagine is more adequate to call "cumbersome". and in fairness with the inttoduction of Focus mode it has become a bit of a mess, insect glaive is the worst i hear for controllers, i personally haven't many issues with MK with some buttons bound to my MMO buttons.

2 the rat traveling by itself can be changed

3. Tutorials is a common complaint and has been for a a long ass time, capcom probably should work on that.

4. yeah some weapons are definitely better then others, but if you're good at the game the difference becomes negligible in casual play, so just choose what you enjoy.

5 There is a training area that has some combos for you to do.
The seikret default controls are garbage. In the settings change it to type 2, and then it works how you'd expect it too. I hope whoever picked the default has wet socks for the next year and stubs their toes every evening at 5 o clock

+1 to you using the training area, it'll display combos for you to try out. There is also a weapon control list in the menu.
Each weapon is a unique playstyle. MH betas are more geared to veterans of the series too, the full game will be a lot more trial and error friendly.
I feel MH has always felt clunky upon first stepping foot into the series. It's been a long while now since I started but the friends I pulled in with World since it countered their biggest complaint about the game of being dated really struggled.

Some weapons for sweaty runs are objectively better, however with your example of SnS and Gunlance, it's coming from a beginner perspective.

For example, sword and shield has several benefits like easier healing, pretty decent mounting and a pretty tight up close style. Each weapon really has its own considerable list of strengths once you get your head around them. The game will become easier and this will further apply to subsequent titles.
God i wish, sadly my gunlance is not overpowered XD.
As others said each weapon fits a unique playstyle and has pros n cons.

As for changing controls being "clunky" not really, mode/button dependent moves are necesary for any move depth
This game is risk vs reward weapon choice. The clunkier it is, the bigger hit it carries. For instance, sword and shield is easy to wield, has very low learning curve to be decent, but it has abysmal reach and low damage yield per hit. It's easy to get in and out with it, but you have to be exceptional to deal large amount of damage by positioning and weaving in and out perfectly.
i get what you are saying about the combat, the hunter doesn't even turn when attacking, because they decided to move all of that to Focus mode, my suggestion, set focus mode to toggle with L2 or LB or whatever you are using as controls, and just play the game with that enabled.. the hunter will suddenly move, turn mid combo and be way faster, also turn the camera speed to 5 for focus mode (which is max, and trust me, it's just enough) The game will feel more like older monster hunters this way.. only annoying thing is that you will play with the reticle the whole time while fighting, hopefully they will provide a setting to disable the reticle in focus mode... right now it doesn't exist.
There are a few settings you can alter with the birb so it won't just run on its own lol

First are different ways to call it, pressing up (on the d pad) calls it in auto path mode, pressing down calls it in manual mode. You can play with these a bit get your preffered method.

You can also just straight up disabled auto pathing mode, the fun part of auto pathing is you can sharpen and do other things while it moves, rhe down side is you don't always wanna auto path.

Give it some time. You're seeing the pros and cons of each weapon without realizing it.

When i first started playing, i felt the exact same thing. Most of us did probably, but its just part of the game. Each weapon has its own unique style, strengths, and weaknesses. Like you said gunlance yeah has these crazy high damage combos, but blows through sharpness and requires alot of set up and know how to play, while sword and shield feels so scrawny, but once you start dancing around a monster, perfect guarding, and landing your cheeky hit and run combos, you can be a MENACE. The series is NOTORIOUS for kinda just dropping newbies on their head lol, but with a lil trail and error it clicks. Also we're all learning the new focus mechanics together so dont worry about feeling like you dont know whats up, most of us are doing the same.

Give it a fair chance, play with a pal or someone who knows the game a lil and I'm SURE youll find somthing that sticks with you, (Hunting horn / Switch Axe supremacy tho)

I feel like that's part of the game. You start out simple, against simple monsters, but as you learn and improve, the fights get tougher, you get better, and you work around with the limits and pull off sick dodges and flashy finishing moves for massive damage. It's a wonderful feeling conquering the hardest monsters in the game very quickly or without damage.

It's a skill issue.

This is a game where you need to LEARN your weapons and monster moves. Don't expect to beat hard bosses in one try. You learn by hunting, that's the point of the game. You hunt for fun, and in the process you learn everything about your weapons and monsters.
