Monster Hunter Wilds
Is Sword/shield decent in Wilds? Worth learning it or only for new players?
I've been off and on the series for ages, but never really got into Monster Hunter since it takes a lot for me to stick to circular/grindy games. I came to World hyper late and loved it, this time I really want to get involved in the MP and community.

However, seeing the skill of veterans and the complexity of some weapons just kinda scares the ♥♥♥♥ out of me. It was easy in World when I was alone and could just scream a warcry and smash with no one to laugh at me (lol), but I am the kind of person that really zeros in on one play style and tries to master it.

From Wilds and the beta and I've kinda liked both charge axe and regular 'ol sword and shield. But the sword/shield kind seems like a "you suck at this game and now everyone knows it" weapon, but I've heard that is noob mentality and that it's quite a good weapon.

The idea of specing for specific ailments or elements which seems to be sword/shield's specialty seems appealing to me.

I dunno, yes everyone is worrying about optimization but I was hoping some vets could give insight if I should avoid wasting time mastering sword and shield or maybe have suggestions for good weapons that can be used effectively by someone new (without trolling teammates) that also reward you for master.

Also, I like playing support and usually do that (I was a combat medic irl), but the buff hammer thing looks complicated, and I'm worrying about soloing with it. Insight would be great if you have any.

Sorry for it being so long.

SnS rules. It's only thought of as a 'beginner' weapon because you have very low commitment on most of your moves.

When they say it can do everything, they mean it- it can use almost every mechanic in the game. Mounting? Stunning? Cutting tails? Perfect Guard and Power Clash? Charge attacks? Evasive manuevers? Using items with your weapon out? It's got everything except Offset Attacks. It even has combo string enders.

In wilds in particular, you can sort of just smash triangle over and over and slide around until you're hitting the spot you want, but the real special thing about it is that you can focus attack wounds that aren't open yet (when you see the white marking) and do this ripping attack that forces them open and does extra damage. They don't have the /strongest/ wound popping attack, so if you're in multiplayer you can let other weapons take the lead.

Status weapons are pretty good in this game! 'Cause you can use one until you get the procs you want and then switch to an element or raw weapon and just do damage instead!
I don't use SnS, prefer lance and bow at endgame. However, the SnS is pretty damn good in wilds. Damage wise? It's not bad. Just turn off the thing that changes weapon damage values shown by type and you'll see it's doing about the same as a Dual blade.
Infact, most of the weapons are pretty good in wilds except for the bowguns which took a heavy performance nerf in terms of versitality in exchange for cost of ammo. (They can get up there, but it's more about the gauge than the ammo types now).

Sword and shield is good, overall. Simply because while it's not the highest damage tier, it's also very good at keeping you alive. Between being able to slide under the monster and attacking it from the far side, to being able to shield (guard up is your friend here tho). The damage output is stable, and if you use Lala barina it has a good support in stuns.

Me tho? I'm going to keep poking the monsters face and doing power clashes with my spear.
To update, SNS is literally EZ mode. Game is relatively boring at launch-compared to world (played souls games beforehand), with Anjanath etc. just not a great game compared to previous iterations. Feels like baby world with bigger environments

World was Baby World.
Its too much of a simpleton weapon.

Its too much of a simpleton weapon.
Then so is like 90% of the weapon in the game lol.
DPS isn't the only measure of a good weapon. SNS is usually pretty good honestly. Genuinely you'll want elemental bonuses to help boost damage since its a speedy weapon so knowing a monsters weakness is a plus and the attack rate is good. You can use items without sheathing (unique to SNS) and you have options for blunt damage and slashing so you have some good versatility. The trade off is lower maximum damage and range than some other weapons. Some experienced players consider it a noob trap since some pick that first and never move on but its a solid well rounded choice for any MH I've played.

If you want maximum damage output usually longsword or greatsword is a good go to as they have high maximum damage ceilings, attack speed you'll want dual blades, no weapon covers every base.
sword and shield is so irrelevant I forgot it even exists
As someone that got into Sword and Shield (SnS) in World's endgame and used it for some of Rise, Wild's SnS feels like the best SnS has ever been. The reason its considered a good weapon for newer players is because it has low commitment attacks, the fastest sheathe time and the ability to use items with your weapon out anyway allowing you to quickly heal as you need it, high mobility, and a shield as a last minute block. Its well-roundedness also lets you pick your favored fighting style and migrate to a weapon you might prefer more that specializes in the style you prefer.

Don't let the new player friendly weapon tagline dissuade you though, because its well-roundedness means that, aside from reach, it has no real weaknesses and its versatility is its greatest strength. For example, shield bashes lets you get KOs and knockdowns, you can move during some attacks to maintain aggression while sidestepping to evade, a couple of its moves hit hard for those openings where available, it has easy access to mounting, rapid attacks means that it does good with applying status or dealing elemental, quick access to any item you need when you need it like traps, seeds, and pods, and with Wilds adding in Perfect Guard, its shield is more than adequate for deflecting a number of attacks and hitting back with a hard counter. The SnS is a weapon with many tools available to it and knowing which tool to emphasize and when is how the skill ceiling for it sits higher than you'd expect on an otherwise straightforward and no-frills weapon.

Lastly, if you want to be a support then don't worry too much because SnS has you covered there as well, so long as you put on Wide-Range and Speed eating skills. Being the fastest to use their items means that you can also be the quickest to react when a teammate eats one to the face and maxing out speed-eating means that you can have them back in shape by the time they get up off the ground. I've saved more than a few Safi runs with SnS thanks to how good Free Meal was in World/Iceborne. Wide-range and speed eating also allows you to throw on more buffs than most people's typical Demon and Armor Drugs. You can down might and adamant seeds, Immunizers, and even dash juices as well for your bow and Dual Blade friends for each zone you fight the monster in. Add in a couple pitfall and shock traps plus the materials to make them in the field and you can easily pull more than your own weight in quests with all the added stun time you can force on your target. There's a reason SnS has a reputation as a strong support weapon! Just make sure you're still slashing the enemy while you're doing all this.

PS. Don't worry too much about playing more of a support role even while solo. If you want to do support stuff, but don't want to play with other players, Alma has a settings option in the quest menu that lets you change your SOS flares to "Support hunters Only" which just means that using the flare only delivers the NPC hunters and not real players instead so you can spread those buffs around your Astrum Unit buds!

I made you a flow chart.

->-----Is weapon fun?------yes------>Keep playing it

- no

i think you should ignore 'you suck at this game and now everyone knows it' stigma. I main GS, but bit of everything but SnS and HH on World (300+ hours PS4 & PC), but Wilds? man while GS still my goat, SnS never been so good to play. Optimization also in my opinion not really matter, so I like my earplugs, skill that often get shamed as 'crutch' and what not, this is in the end a game, you play it, you have fun? keep doing it. And SnS in wilds is not lacking DPS, maybe if you play with high skilled players, but most players is average, and maybe you'll not get as much as DPS, but does anyone really called it out in game? haven't really get that , and i already done the 100+ multiplayer hunts. maybe in reddit/forums but in-game? nobody cares, as long as you contribute, not carting stupidly multiple times and make the quests failed. Heck you can mitigate it, using moxie as your own insurance, if you feel you're that lacking. Beside GS, Lance and SnS have been my favorite so far in Wilds, haven't get chance to tried anything else.
As a smashy board and stabby thing user, I give it a thumbs up. Abuse the slide move, is probably the best thing it got in wilds and makes dealing with a lot of monster's movesets into a joke(Zoh shia rears up to vomit fire/fireballs, just slide under it and happily keep swinging away while everyone else runs for their life, lol).
NBA youngboy... *farts* oohh give me gaass talkin about that lil boy..
If optimal damage output is your priority it might not be the best choice. But my god is it fun to play. Full control of the fight and you almost never have to disengage. Just constantly slashing away. So honestly really good dps overall.
I think its easy to dismiss the ol sword n board as a beginner weapon in a lineup of morphing axes, musical hammers and explosive lances, but I think its a fantastic weapon.

It's "okay".
But it ain't that good at anything at all, just "okay" on all front.
It's lack the "WOWzer" move with BIG damage like GS or CB.
It's lack the cool factor of a more flashy weapon like DB or LS.
It's blocking power is also not as good as lance family.

But it does an "okay" damage with an "okay" defense with an "okay" mobility.
All at the same time.

But it's just so "boring" overall. (atleast for me)

Nothing about it stand out aside from being able to use without having to sheath first to support your team, but even then you might as well play HH instead.

But try it out yourself, see if you like it or not.
Maybe it might click with you...or maybe not.
