Playerbase Retention is abysmal....
This is my parody of hollywood media....

ALL for a 5 second "retention graph" in black mirror episode....

Hollywood wants people to add the word 'Retention" to peoples vocabulary.
They purposely put out garbage games so people will use the word "retention" more.

By calling out their practices for retention, they undoubtedly reduce the retention of the word "retention"

Retention rate has pretty much leveled out as expected

The tourist has come and gone. The casual saw the credits roll so they quit. The hopeful are just waiting for the next title update. And the 1% are just playing the game they enjoy. Nothing new.
Yup, nothing out of the ordinary, playerbase looks fine and healthy.

A month after Wilds released it dropped to around exactly same concurrent player count as World had a month after release. This is even after getting more than a million more concurrent players at launch.

All this proves is the streamlining and appealing to a more casual audience didn't mean more people would stick around.

Capcom 'won' by profiting from the success of World and sold a boat load at launch, the casual audience 'won' by having a streamlined, easy, story-driven experience, and the only ones who 'lost' were the MH fans that wanted a true to form MH game.
They have "retained" me for 20yrs.

People have been whining about MH since day one. Monster Hunter Freedom had a 5.4 overall score for the first year and was universally ♥♥♥♥-on outside Japan. People hated the controls for the original MH, using the right analog stick for attacks and not the camera (you think the camera is bad now?!)

I played online when there were less than 10 people playing online and it was a win when a SECOND lobby would open up... back when lobbies held 4 people max.

If you "get" the game, it sticks with you.

Lol, I haven't even started playing yet. I'm waiting for them to fix the game.

For business models player retention is a great tool to sell more products to the consumer.

Drop in playerbase in 1 month is looking something like:
World: 66%
Wilds: 18%
You’re probably right, they purposedly put out less engaging experiences and then keep on talking about retention as a marketing tool.

Except this isnt entirely accurate, is it?

Yes, the concurrent player count dropped to 90k at its weakest, but that was the literal DAY before the title update hit, which grabbed 550k players. It HAS dropped to 9th most played, overtaken by two popular stream games and the POE new season. It is NOT doing poorly, you need to get a new stick.

You have no idea how to interpret the data your spitting as fact. This is normal for every game out there, even the very best, most popular, most playable and optimised games.

It's lowest peak was actually two days before the update. 185k. The lowest low that SteamDB has over the last week is from yesterday at 66k.

I think my comment is fairly accurate or else I wouldn't have said it. MH has picked up dedicated fans since the launch of World seven years ago. Did you not expect that? Both World, which was the most successful MH game ever, and Rise, also successful, launched on Steam. Once again, did you not expect the series to pick up some fans? I don't expect Wilds' player count to track perfectly with World, and to claim that would be disingenuous.

I don't see how any of what you said shows my post to be inaccurate. My point was that the only players left are those more dedicated fans. Even with the update that you mentioned, it took 4 days to dropped back into the 2xx thousand range.

Ill come back when G rank is added. Simple as. Theres nothing more for me to do.
Well why would people stay? It's been a while since release. Some lose natural interest, as evident here as well by looking at global achievements, many others simply finished all the content. The playtime is limited by the amount of content, simple as that.

Unless you grind to max out multiple builds, help friends or go for 100% you won't get too many hours.

Most players are just breezing through the content, especially the base game, as it's far too easy.

Luckily Capcom agrees with at least some of the criticisms considering they rushed to put in more challenging content. This might be a good sign for the eventual expansion.

Its a mostly single player game, why does retention matter?
Sure there is a little grind and some content updates but MH titles are worlds away from like an MMO in terms of content/grind and its not as aggressively engineered for constant play like a moba or arena shooter etc.
