I have no idea what the "meta" is, but I mostly just wear Gore Magala gear anyway because the set bonus is too good to ignore. And sadly there is no incentive for me to ever wear anything else (at least until the next update that adds a set with better skills) because the division between armour skills and weapon skills has made it so all the skills that actually make a difference to particular weapons have to go ON the weapons themselves.... leaving the armour full of skills that apply equally to everything, and so never ever change. Wilds has killed build diversity.

this is exactly what im sayin, the gore set is too good to try anything else right? what ive decided is to focus more on the support now instead of the (my hunter's) DPS. i get a lot of requests to follow for other hunts now and do less shoulder to shoulder mirror matches with sweaty finger fellas
Keep in mind with the way the game is currently structured that the difference in damage output from a "meta" and non-meta build are very small.

There are videos out there of speed runners wearing 0 armor and still getting obscene clear times. Probably faster than your average player wearing a meta DPS set.

Fair enough. I'm done with multiplayer though, at least for the time being. Done with other people attacking monsters I'm trying to capture while they're in the trap. Done with insanely long loading screens eventually leading to a message informing me the hunt is over without me. Done with going into other hunters' worlds only to find they don't use pop-up camps and the target monster is on the far end of the map and I can only get there at the whims of my mentally challenged bird.
I got my 100 multiplayer hunts for my profile cheevo, and now I'm back to the considerably faster and more efficient process of picking 1-vs-1 fights with every monster I go past while travelling the land. Well.... 2-vs-1 if you count my Palico. And sometimes 2-vs-2 or 2-vs-3 depending on other monsters joining in. I'm cool with that. I love hunting multiple monsters at the same time. Makes things interesting.
the gore set being good would not be less of an issue if you were able to put weapon skills on it. there would still be a set "best" armor set, probably still gore, because the set bonus itself is really strong. again, world/iceborne metas were just as homogenous when looking at the top DPS sets, except they tended to slot in a ton of attack jewels instead of the relative variety of skills we're looking at right now. gore's meta because the set bonus itself, combined with the antivirus skill, is essentially free damage, that would not be any less the case if we had even more straightforward damage boosting skills available on armor to stack on top of it.

the difference with wilds is that because there's that weapon/armor divide, it's much less damaging to a build to slot in something that isn't part of the world/iceborne meta. you don't need to spend slots on HP or stamina up as that's essentailly built in now, a lot of hte more expensive skills have been discounted, and so your DPS does not fall off nearly as much if you decide you want to slot in earplugs or partbreaker or blight defense or what have you. speedrunning builds will forgo these most of the time, but when skills don't need to justify themselves versus slotting in another attack decoration it's a lot easier to justify using them.

being overly fixated on a "meta" is also kind of a meaningless exercise in most multiplayer games, an expectation that there won't be a meta is nonsense, there's always a meta in every game that is sufficiently popular because people are gonna figure out what works. but it's especially silly in monster hunter when build variety isn't even necessarily a goal, builds are primarily the game's hidden difficulty slider. you can either go for an optimized damage loadout of one of maybe two or three playstyles available to your weapon, playing the game on hard mode for the reward of faster hunts and theoretically more efficient farming, or you can trade away some amount of damage in exchange for toning down the difficulty of the game in a way that matters to you - if roars give you trouble, earplugs. if you get stunned a lot, there's a decoration to stop that. if you find yourself running out of potions, there's skills to make healing more efficient.

that is the build variety monster hunter has always had. if there is a particular problem with wilds, it is that because the game is overall so easy (at the moment, anyways), there's nothing in the game to punish players for running such extremely aggressive builds that closely resemble speedrunning builds. if it wasn't the gore set, it would be some other set that would be the objective best at DPS, but msot people should be too scared to run that sort of set and should be trading away some DPS in exchange for survivability. having a wider variety of tough monster fights will probably fix that problem as time goes on and regular players start needing to make more use of the other skills in the game, especially since the DPS dropoff isn't quite so dramatic as it would be in previous games due to, again, the most straightforward unconditional DPS skills being restricted to weapon slots.

The wonderful thing about meta, is it means nothing in this PvE game. Dont like it? Dont use it. Simple problems require simple solutions.
