Answered a SOS, the host got mad at me for "not doing enough damage"...
... When I was busy throwing healing powder on him because he kept getting hit by literally every single attack, and his heals interrupted because he didn't move out of the way before trying to chug a potion.

I'm sorry for caring about your health and safety, Host, next time I'll just let you get carted?

RE-EDIT: There's too many mixed opinions here to decide if there's a "right" way that hosts generally want me to play, so I've decided I'm just going to keep doing my powders, and if the host doesn't want me doing it, they can tell me to stop or kick me.

Sweats hate wide-range support hunters.
Welcome to a title getting popular and inviting sweats and casuals.
The sweats get so mad about the casuals that then they create weird rules to enforce on everyone like "No wide-range".

Bro, healing bullets and powder has been in the game longer then you have

if you hunt with others with rank 7+, the cost of heals is nothing compared to losing the quest from carts

bad take, try hunting horn

Yeah but how long have healing bullets been useful in the game?

aaand blocked. let ppl do somewhat waht they want
So most basically host was not happy with your damage while getting tossed around like a ragdoll?
Damn, must have been hard not to find someone doing the hunt for him singlehanded xD

Personally as a player I definitely play a bit riskier intentionally to get good big hits in just to see if I can pull them off and that is really fun for me. Sometimes I get carted and it is not often surprising, point is I know what I am doing and if I take a hit its because I knew full well that that was a possible outcome. I had a friend that dropped everything they were doing to lifepowder/Dust for the team when any one of us took a hit and this behavior comes from a misunderstanding of those items and their place in the game. It is not meant to be your way to upkeep a lobbies health, it is more meant for an "OH CRAP!" button for them. What often happened with my friend I mentioned is by the time he sheathed his hammer got to his item and used it I was already halfway done chugging my mega pot I had already anticipated using cause I got a risky hit in. In some hunts it so happened that those "OH CRAP!" items that he had, ran out before a moment where they really could have been used to save a triple wipe. I think if a player likes a supportive play style there is no fault in that, but it is flawed to believe that you can do that through consumables, a player like that would be much better suited for a LBG(maybe HBG) or hunting horn as those weapons have it built into their kit to provide hunter to hunter support via healing songs, recovery ammo and buffing ammo. That being said, free health is free health and turning on your fellow hunter for it is unjustified especially if what you say about this particular hunter is true.

Bro had SOS on. He has no right to complain randoms that join him aren't doing enough damage because they're playing support.
If you wanna play support do it. Don't listen to the others trying to tell you how to play the game. And yeah I wouldn't take it too personally the guy probably knew he was bad and was taking it out on you.

i dont know if you're sarcastic on your edit but i do hope you are because thats the worst edit i have ever read.

Good DPS means nothing if you're team is gonna fail the quest due carts.

I'm not. I only played a tiny bit of World before this. I don't know if there's a "right way" I should be doing things in co-op Monster Hunter play.

The super mixed opinions here is just leaving me confused now.

the only etiquette you need to wonder about
-dont sit in the corner spamming heals/buffs doing nothing else
-dont intentionally cause the quest to fail
-dont knock people out of mounts (via flashes or otherwise)
-wait to see what host does if they put a trap down on weak monster
-wait to see what host does to a sleeping monster
-do what the host wants to do, if they do communicate
everything else is fair game. you play the game how you want, its not a competition its a team game and everything contributes to the hunt whether people like it or not

Please OP, do not stop healing people. It is a really good habit and the other 2 of us that may be in the hunt really appreciate you preventing triple carts and topping us off. Thank you for your service.

Anyone who tells you otherwise is bad, simple as that.

I had a set for Wide Range back in World for this exact reason, and I had two friends that regularly ran either Wide Range or brought mats for Lifepowders. I'm a veteran player and can solo anything. Getting a Lifepowder instantly thrown in my face every time I or anyone else made a mistake, get this:

IT SPEEDS UP THE HUNT.

It means that other guy isn't taken out of the fight to go through the slow (without Speed Eating) drinking animation. Newbs may not appreciate it right now, but it's a good habit you're really going to want to keep doing in harder fights, especially when ATs and Master Rank get released.

Trust me, it's not sweats that get mad about this stuff. It's dumb casuals trying to masquerade as sweats.

While yes, top hunter priority is to damage/stagger/kill/capture the monster, it's also true that if someone carts, they're doing 0 dps. It's better to stop your own attacks for a moment to pop a heal, instead of being down a whole hunter for a bit until they get back from camp. Ultimately, it's the hunter's responsibility to be on their toes and dodge/block attacks on them as needed. But hey, sometimes ya goof, and need a heal. If they look to be able to heal on their own, fine. But if they're unable to, and it's about to be followed up by another attack that will cart, yeah pop a dust or a wide-range heal.

As for healing shots not being useful, I disagree. Pop that on your radial menu, and it's quick to swap to it, pop a heal shot, and go back to the big pew pew. My only complaint this time around is the lack of my preferred gun types having access to it. I loved getting those snipes off with healing shot and preventing a cart.

Now, if you're sitting off in a corner not fighting at all and just popping wide range potions and dusts all the time, that's a problem. But nothing wrong at all with pausing your own attacks for a moment to top someone off about to cart. If someone gets mad about a powder, just come back with "stop carting I won't have to".
