Do you run always most "meta" damage builds or more comfy builds ?
I am playing since Tri and I would say my hunting times are pretty decent with anything between 7-12 minutes for most endgame fights in everything since 4U.

Buuut I always use comfy builds, I close to always have evade extender, evade window, divine blessing etc.
Maybe I am not that good it dodging even after like 20k hours in the series or I don't know but my hunting times are just better when having more comfy stuff.

Now in Wilds I did try another super meta dps builds and my hunting times are also just slower because I just play worse, I think I will never be a super ultra good MH player who can play pure dps builds without problems even when its my most played series.

So I was wondering do you play pure dps builds and are good with it without getting tiled or do you also have more comfy builds with still decent hunting times in it ?

big damage = big fun

The failure rate is so low, it doesn't really matter at this point. I just find it ironic people are not willing to try out Naked runs.
Try playing Wide Gunlance - the majority of offensive skills don't affect shelling anyway.
A state of permanent comfy. Bliss...
I don't even know the meta, I just use what sounds good. Currently running wexploit 5, crit eye 5, crit boost 3, flayer 5, partbreaker 3, burst 1
divine blessing 3 and a handful of others on a artian blast CB. I like big numbers and bright flashes but I'm sure it's probably not the most "optimal" CB build out there

Both. I push myself as far away as I can from comfort skills. The monkey in my brain likes seeing big number get bigger. However, I don't mind resetting my own hunts and carting for an afternoon by myself to learn a fight. There's a difference between running a risky build and carting every now and then vs turbo-inting yourself in a stranger's SOS back to back.

I just play whatever gives me the most fun

I like full defense abnormal status builds.

more meta more fun.

its all about earning those big numbers, defense means nothing if you dont die anyway
As a rule meta damage builds suck ass for 90% of players and you should not use them, unless you are also speed running/doing monsters hitless.
Seriously. you are not as good as the people on the bleeding edge of progression and copying their hyper aggressive builds will make you worse.

While admitting that you are not as good as the best players and adding skills that improve survivability will make you a ton better, hunt times are made much shorter if you dont cart, or if you are immune to a monsters status or you need to heal less due to high defences etc.

Or at least thats always been my experience.
Defense first, then i add offensive skills, currently, i found i really like maximum might, so i slot it in when i can. My favorite comfy skill would have to be recovery speed.

I made a artian sleep lance as it does not have one normally.
♥♥♥♥ meta. Go for style.
i dont do too badly with meta stuff, but i will also cry if i cant fit in my beloved speed eating skill. in world i ran with a full support set for the longest time and even killed alatreon with it. dont even remember what i did in rise. in old games, well its harder to get lots of skills, but i tended to have one or two (most recently i can remember was earplugs but i also liked psychic a lot) that i prioritised and anything else i could fit in was just a bonus.

you're not playing the game correctly if the only thing you're focusing on is meta, the skills are all there to be messed around with and to find a balance of what works and what you actually enjoy using (not just because having a balance helps you survive longer). i do like the changes they made to skills in this game forcing people to prioritise specific offensive skills instead of just trying to fit as many as possible into their build all the time, hopefully it will make for some interesting creativity in whats considered meta or speedrunning sets.
Plus there's also brand new skills like foray which if you're just trying to copy the meta of previous titles you might completely miss and ignore when it may well be very powerful, you just dont know until you experiment
