I guess after using status effect a couple times you could switch to raw damage, but fights just don't last long enough to bother.
Then you switching mid fight for a faster weapon such as Sword n Shield for example, or also something ranged.
I made 7 Loadouts for each weapon I use: Blast, Fire, Water, Thunder, Ice, Dragon, Raw. Each set uses a primary weapon of that element. The secondary weapon is a Paralysis Weapon of the same type. So my SnS_Fire set has a Fire SnS primary and Paralysis SnS secondary. As soon as I load into the hunt, I swap to the Paralysis weapon as I'm en route to the monster. I'll use the weapon until I get at least one paralysis off and will continue using it until the monster changes zones and I can swap to the "Damage" weapon while following it.
I don't like the idea of bringing two different weapon classes because if I decided I'm going to hunt with a Switch Axe, I'm not going to want to swap to a Gunlance. But being able to apply Paralysis once or twice and then finish it off with the higher damage option is a lot of fun.
There's valid points in using two of the same weapon type with different status/elements on it, but so far I've found the game easy enough to not need that level of strategy.
I like that they offer the option, but overall it hardly seems necessary.
though i think people are using their main weapon for both slots for more coverage.
That being said I think its a largely wasted mechanic. I hope they reward the use of it more in future updates.
