I seriously wish they hadn't removed Abandon Quest
Just to have the ability to redact everything that happened in a hunt was great. "Return from Quest" has its uses, but when I accidentally waste items and the whole thing starts going to hell, it is so much better to be able to just reset everything.
Heck, just now I accidentally killed a monster in a mult-hunt. I had the SOS up, but it wasn't the other hunters (though they tend to all be murder-hobos). This one was entirely my fault. I just left in shame, but the mark is still there on the card.

In any case... I don't expect most folks to get my aversion to killing the monsters, but I'm sure we can agree that it was better to have the option to redact bad hunts before they're done....

I think you can by speaking to alma ? I've never had to but if you speak with her, you can cancel quest, at least ? not sure if it returns your items

Resetting back to the Pre-Quest state is kinda the point of "Abandon Quest" and what makes it different from "Return from Quest".
For instance, "Return from Quest" is for stuff like tail-hunting. Chase a monster, cut its tail off, carve the tail, return with the carve.
"Abandon Quest" is for when the whole thing is a complete write-off and you wish it had never happened. Except they removed it. Funny how they're usually all about making things simpler except they've removed this old-school quality of life feature that was actually welcome.
It's a little stupid but quitting to main menu does roll back your progress and abandons the quest. Normally you can "Quit without saving" and "Save and Quit", but you can't do the last one in the middle of a quest. So just quit without saving and get your items back.
You can just quit without saving.

Unclear about the need for this necro but ♥♥♥♥ it:

Game autosaves, even if you don't manually. If you save before leaving for the uth duna fight, for example, and quit without saving (or the game crashes), you'll load at camp, after the cutscene, with the objective being "kill the uth duna". Previously, I'm fairly sure games would not save unless you specifically saved, and would instead load you back where you saved, prior to taking on the assignment.

Necroed because I was looking for "Abandon quest" option and this was the top thread. Figured I'd leave one solution here for others.

Autosave might get in the way of quests with cutscenes, but everything worked well for my arena quests. Quitting without saving returned me to the base, with food buffs still at full duration, and no items spent. I could practice, but quit and retry if I made too many mistakes in the fight.

From what I've seen it doesn't autosave when a quest is active, though it might depend on what sort of quests. I've had quite a few quests where I accidentally killed a monster instead of Capturing it, and aborting the game process made sure it didn't stain my record.
One thing I DID notice however is that if I started a Field Survey quest and then aborted the game process, when I got back into the game, the monster / quest was no longer available.

just did this earlier, I quit the game without saving and when i reloaded I still have all the items from before the quest. The quest I quit out of is the very first quest to capture the Yian Kut Ku after the main game. I just had to talk to alma to access the quest again.

That is normal, since the spawn changes. And unless you save a field survey first, the moment you relog into the game the spawn changes again.

Yep. Alot of people are saying autosave gets in the way, but I always turn that off so beats me if people don't understand you can't quit without saving if you have auto save on.

More to the point I dont really think this game is as punishing as older titles, you'd have to be really desperate for items to actually care about wasting them.

Where do you turn auto save off?

Can you please tell us what settings exactly? Every single google result says explicitly you can't turn autosave off.
Agreed. Even when my game crashes, it burns 1/3 from my investigations. The old system would have saved those. not that 100-400 GP is too much to refresh the 3/3... still...
" But you can infinitely restock item at camp , i hate it ! " is what people preaching .

Your box containing infinite item no ? No fear of wasting items :steammocking:
