Did you lure the correct monster to her?
Usually the monster is right next to the Hunting Assistant too... at least for me so far.
I don't see the issue. You don't really interact with them, you just lure the monster from the Quest to them and they start deploying their tool or whatever....
I haven't gotten the Hunting Assistant during normal exploration.
If you do, then I would assume any monster would count or maybe the closest one.
It should also be noted that yes, any monster that is trappable will work to trigger Gemma putting down the trap. Lala Barina had wandered off somewhere else for me, so I had to use a Congalala to progress.
