Razer core X 4070 MSI unplayble.
Always 40 fps also with frame gen. 4k, full hd or 720p. no matter what i do, always bad performance.

If i play without egpu in portability, the game runs better... no words

I've been experiencing the same issue as you. I'm using a ROG Ally (Z1E) with an RTX 4060 eGPU (SWGZONE). No matter how I adjust the settings (1080p, 720p, 1440p, Balanced, DLAA, ray tracing on/off), the FPS always remains around 50 or lower. Most importantly, I've noticed the CPU usage is consistently very high, usually around 80-90%, while GPU usage remains low, around 50-60%.

Recently, after updating the Nvidia software, I managed to achieve nearly 60 FPS using the "Optimization" feature. However, this automatically sets many graphics options to low, which doesn't make sense since the CPU usage remains high, and the GPU still isn't fully utilized.

I know some might suggest the CPU isn't strong enough, but considering that the Z1E APU can run MH Wilds independently without an eGPU, it's hard to believe it's the CPU's fault. Moreover, I can play other AAA games perfectly with full GPU utilization—for example, Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p with high settings and ray tracing enabled, consistently running above 70 FPS.

Lastly, I'd like to share an interesting workaround I discovered during my testing: If you suddenly increase all graphical settings in MH Wilds to extreme levels (DLAA, high ray tracing, etc.), the FPS will naturally drop dramatically (to around 8 FPS). But if you then revert to medium or high settings (or whatever your preferred settings are), there's a chance the CPU and GPU usage will balance out correctly (around 50% CPU and 90% GPU usage). Unfortunately, as soon as you move to another map or start a new mission, you'll have to repeat this process. It doesn't always work consistently and can be very tedious, so eventually, I stopped using this method altogether.

In my opinion, this issue is definitely related to the game itself, possibly how it handles eGPUs connected via USB4.

Coz my videocard is exactly the same, and a dont have major issues with the game.

Ok genius, tell me why ff rebirth runs 4k and high settings and this MH is locked 40 fps with frame gen actived

Thunderbold speed will be very limited compared to PCI 16 that you find on Mobo's.

Nope, i tried lowest settings at 720p. FPS are 35/40 with frame gen on. If i switch off the fps is 15/18.

I dont know, maybe this game is scared with my razer core x eGPU. All games except this, works fine.

FF rebirth 4k on high settings...

I have this setup:

TV Sony oled a90K HDMI to 4070 EGPU razer core x.
All connected with thunderbolt 4 cable razer.

I selected priority for 4070 in monster hunter wilds app. So AMD radeon is not in conflict.
Maybe ryzen z1 extreme cpu is not enough but if i play with rog ally without 4070, i have more fps. its crazy.

Hmm, that strange, welp, iam not a pc tech thats all i can ask :D
My gpu is also MSI 4070, and with HD textures On - iam getting those 40 fps, without its solid 70 up to 120 at 2k resolution . And that HD pack didnt add a better picture eather lol, for now atleast.

My processor is intel 13th gen, so i dunno.

Yeah its most likely the optimization with the game. Some people are having issues and some aren't even those who have similar rig specs are having different experiences. Luck of the draw I guess

nah, i tried 720p. it is not acceptable 20 fps with no frame gen.

Install the nvidia App, allow it to set to optimal settings. Report back.

It's that easy.


Me 4080 super+ i5 2021 cpu... Playing 120fps at 4k with DLSS, Native 72-80 fps.

May seem stupid, but have you tried to make sure the game is recognizing and using the egpu? I have had pretty hit and miss success with egpus on the legion go.
