About the insect glaive controls (edit at the end kept original for anyone this might help)

So ive been playing monster hunter for a while now, usually my favorite class is the insect glaive but when i started wilds i was using the lance to switch it up a bit. Today I tried the glaive and wow... am I the only one that thinks they went a bit overboard with the controls here? I mean, for example you have 3 different things to aim (focus, kinsect, and hookshot). You gotta mix two of those up together to perform actions that were so simple and easy to do before and the way you jump midair is relative to the way you're facing which means if you arent locked on it can be difficult to go the direction you want to if a tree or monster is blocking your view which can happen a lot jumping around like that.

Im a long time fan of the series, not bashing on the game at all. Just wondering if anyone else noticed the change and did it bother you or am i just being stupid? Maybe there's something im doing wrong but idk. I love this weapon and it really does suck knowing i might just never get used to these new controls.

EDIT: So after some much needed advice from these absolute legends in the comments section I have come to realize this might be the best version of the Insect Glaive in any monster hunter yet, though this is my personal opinion. I am keeping the original post unedited so anyone that might be facing the same frustration as me might stumble upon this thread and hopefully it will help them as much as it has helped me.

In short the solution to my problem was changing some options in the controls that are easily overlooked because there's just so much to configure if you dont pay close attention to every option you wont see them. One of the biggest things that helped was changing the option to toggle focus mode instead of holding it. This was a game changer. Theres a lot of good advice here, just take a look and maybe itll help you if youre struggling with the controls for the IG.

Also remember it might be time consuming but fine tuning the controls to fit what feels the best for you is a must. If you just take the time you're experience with this class will be amazing

Yep, galive is a mess here.
I tried different ways to like it coz its my most used weapon in previous games, but i just cant.
In short you have heavily rely on Focus Mode for your extracts, but thats half of a problem.. Holding circle to do your attacks is stupid AF, holding circle after Vault for a Descending Thrist is so bad, like who thought thats a good idea.

Maybe with mouse and keyboard its fine, but iam not used to play MH with it

No I play on mouse and keyboard and I can tell you its not easy to do. I've played the previous ones with m/kb too so i know that it wasn't a struggle like this to use. But hey at least its not just me. I tried on the controller too but it didn't really help. Its sad that this happened it was probably the most fun to use in previous titles, at least in my opinion

No I play on mouse and keyboard and I can tell you its not easy to do. I've played the previous ones with m/kb too so i know that it wasn't a struggle like this to use. But hey at least its not just me. I tried on the controller too but it didn't really help. Its sad that this happened it was probably the most fun to use in previous titles, at least in my opinion

Well, yeah, just watch some glaive speedruns on YT, its has damage and all, but the way you have to play in order to perform is so unsatisfying.
And i play multiplayer with randoms most of the time, and i cant do ♥♥♥♥♥ with glaive, coz monster constantly changing targets and iam just a dead weight for 2-3 mins while trying to collect all 3 extracts to gain my full moveset...Its ok-ish in low rank, but on Tempered Magala its so bad.

Anyways, i found my fun in SnS, GS and LS in this game. So, iam a sword guy now

You may want to go to the settings under: Options, Controls and on page one you should see Directional Controls. Make sure it is set to Type 1 for keyboard.

That gave me the aerial control that I was used from World on the keyboeard.

My personal way and tip is to just toggle focus mode and never bother aiming a kinsect because you never will need to, you can harverst extracts from attacks now, and if you play the loop correctly you will always have full buffs anyway from popping wounds.

Focus mode combined with mouse and keyboard is smooth as hell, now my only problem are monsters where their entire hitbox is always the attack lmao.

Ohh really??? Dude i just saw this and im gonna give it a shot thank you so much, this right here is exactly why i posted this. I was hoping maybe there was something i overlooked that made it easier to use

Wow ok... this is also some great advice. Thank you so much i had no idea, im going to have to give this another shot. It helps to know there are some people that got it down, so there is hope and i was just doing it wrong. I just gotta get this down, you guys are awesome thank you so much

Yeah dw idk why they have it as a setting tbh. My mate who has been an IG main for his entire monster hunter experience gave it up cause we both forgot about the setting

Pressing alt to just toggle focus mode on for the entire duration ive found is preferable to only having it on while holding my mouse button. I couldnt find a setting to change the toggle

Ya thats what i have it set to, makes it a lot easier to use, but im seeing kl250d say you can toggle focus mode... another thing i stupidly overlooked that will undoubtedly make this so much easier to use

I love the new controls but I'm a DMC player sooo
I'm pretty used to holding down shoulder buttons while messing with both sticks while holding a face button and pressing another.

Personally love the changes to IG myself and I’ve been having a blast. There’s two key things people may have missed with the insect glaive.

1) Focus mode is a godsend. With it on, every time you attack it also flings out your kinsect along with it, giving you your buffs rather fast. Yes it works in the air too, doesn’t matter.

2) Your kinsect now has a piercing move that allows it to travel through a monster and pick up multiple essences at once. With the right kinsect and proper aiming you can get all three in one hit. Not sure about M/KB, but on Xbox controller, with your weapon out, you hold RT and then hold Y. Your weapon will start to glow white, and you’ll hear your kinsect chirping. Release Y and let it fly.

You’ll have to call it back to get the essences of course, but in the event you didn’t get all of them you can just keep holding RT and spamming Y at body parts. With the right kinsect it’ll open its wings to allow three essences to be gathered.

As a side note, you can also use Wounds to instantly get all three essences back too, via the focus strike on a wound. If you’re solo this is a great way to just keep spamming your tornado spins.
