Does your workaround involved some downloaded config files?
アンジェル might have more pertinent info as I haven't used any downloaded configs. This is just the first thing that came to mind.
so yeah check that, you might have accidentally caused it by following those directions
Make sure that the nvidia app isn't set to automatically optimize games.
Settings>Games and Apps>Automatically optimize newly added games and apps.
Make sure the tick is deactivated.
Edit: You don't have Steam installed in "Program Files", right?
Try running the game and Steam as administrator.
Just be aware that running steam as admin also allows the built-in chromium web browser admin privileges, as well. Just be careful out there.
It should be in ...\Steam\steamapps\common\MonsterHunterWilds\
If nothing else works, rename the file and let the game generate a new one. See if it will allow you to save settings. If it will, just copy the contents of the original and paste them over the new one and see if it works.
Just wanted to say i've been following this thread and ive finally got it to save, i've had the exact same problem. Config file is now off read only, Im no longer running it as admin and you might want to check your nvidia geforce app to ensure "Settings>Games and Apps>Automatically optimize newly added games and apps" is turned to off for all games you play.
Turns out it wasn't the Config file, it was Nvidia doing it. Now I'm absolutely sure I've turned off its Optimization. Normally I don't mind, but it won't even let me adjust the window size. The drop down menu won’t let me select anything else other than max size.
