I believe the recent backlash on the hate over nata is because he is "relatable" to a certain type.
I think it is very commonly agreed that nata is a bad character who brings the experience down. I'll limit all the things I can say to just the reaction to this character because it's hard enough on the pro-nata people as is!

The funny thing is in japanese he's apparently just a damaged, fatherless kid that doesn't really take the spotlight, and is clearly having a nervous breakdown. In english he's one of THREE main characters that take attention over you the player, and the game seems to want you to agree with him.

What's worse is that in english, nata is clearly a self-insert. nata is also clearly designed to be taken seriously, and his words are clearly the honest beliefs of the localization staff.

I think the people who are trying to currently defend his character as "empathetic" (at least 8 of those 10 letters are correct, feel free to figure out which ones!) and "traumatized" are missing that the english writers want people to sagely nod along to what he is saying and feel smug. Possibly snap while obliviously saying "yeah, man!" and maybe even give reddit gold.

I can only wonder in horror what "DEBOONK" and "deconstruction" tropes the writers either could not put in or are saving for the required 15 hour struggle session in the g-rank story.

In that regard I think the people starting to defend him in the anti-nata threads see themselves in him, and they don't like it; especially how people aren't just calling him "stunning and brave" like the writers wanted you to.

No "media literacy" will change that.

The actual distillation of the thread and point of the thread is post #187, but post #299 says it more bluntly. I tried marking some posts quoting it as answer because the response was so hilariously on point to the topic that I had to enshrine it. Unfortunately the troll who made the response changed his message, and so I changed the answer.

i can't stand him for one simple reason, he ruins the plot. it's hard to participate in suspension of disbelief when the hunters don't see the problem with inviting a child into such dangerous situations. i'm supposed to be some badass hunter conquering the worst mother nature can throw at them and yet it's treated like a playground everyone is invited to. it's sad but in order to maintain the plot in my head i literally skip the cutscenes as soon as he starts talking. i like to pretend he doesn't exist. i'm sure others have different motivations for despising him, but i can only speak to myself.
Y'know, this reminded me of the situation in Star Trek TNG. Enterprise (the main ship of the series) had families, civilians living aboard the starship which went into many dangerous situations. It does sound counter intuitive but i'm fairly sure that they did that to show it was during a moment of peace and a statement about the federation ideals.
Maybe the secondary purpose of having a child amidst dangerous situations here is to show ''your hunter is badass look at him protecting the child'' or something? Perhaps i'm overthinking...but i indulge in such activies

i guess i always thought of the enterprise as having plot armor. while there may be non combatant on board, they're never in any "real" danger. as long as you weren't an extra in the show and wearing a red/gold uniform, you weren't dying. it's a pain in the ass to replace an actor w/ another one. in a game however all you're doing is having one less VA. often times 1 person will portray multiple characters so having one of theirs die is probably a blessing to them. plus games often represent an individualistic driven narrative, while tv shows and movies are simply the expression of the writer/producer. this places more pressure on the player to keep others' alive. or not if you're into that.

A fair point, thanks.
I think there's way too many adults way too obsessed over a child in a video game on this forum. Nata is just my item farm.

i read and understood it completely. my statement perfectly illustrated that fact. your assertion, people defend him because they relate to him (empathizing) is less likely than mine, people dislike him because they relate to him (projecting)

not sure how i could be any clearer
the implication is that they defend him out of an emotional wound that the wunderkind-in-his-own-mind that they clearly identify with is neither a wunderkind or even liked.

how would people identify with him if they disagree with every word coming out of that 25 year old college grad self-insert? I'm not a midwit. I'm not a mouthpeice for the global state religion.

you are claiming I see myself in a character that is utterly repulsive to me BECAUSE of who he is, and it makes no sense. Especially when you consider my statements are accurate to the situation, and yours is textbook projection among other things.

Even down to you calling what you are doing as "empathy."

it DOES make sense that my proper characterization of the situation makes you realize things about yourself, and therefore you actually project your own situation onto me in belief it somehow absolves you from your unease. that you project your projection just seals the deal as to what is going on.

I think that your unease is still there, so no, I have not been doomed in your place by your accusations.

i never once claimed you didn't like him because you saw yourself in him. you represent a single person. i even claimed i didn't like nata, am i implying i dislike him because i see myself in him? again you're demonstrating far too defensive of a tone to not warrant speculative inquiry

I can confidently say I was never the "kid who did well in school, got a big head, got hit by the realization of mediocrity, and now 'deboonks' things on reddit to keep up appearances of intelligence." I have also never "liked" a new atheist or "Ilovescience!" page on social media. I have also never posted or even taken a picture next to a nintendo switch with my mouth agape.

I know people like nata, some of them are so close in this thread right now that I can tell what brand of funko pops are their favorite.

you started out by insulting me because what I said hit a bit too close to home. trying to switch to concern trolling won't change that you already revealed your hand.

Now, please, find a Priest to talk about your insecurities with, I'm not interested in this odd spree of projections.

I'm even less interested in the personal attacks!

I honestly think all the characters are annoying, not just him. I know MH isn't renowned for their stories, but everyone is kinda flat and boring.
And Alma breathes too much.
Actually, Nata might be the character I hate the least, just because he's emotional (maybe overly so, but at least he's showing something). Like, of course he'd be distraught over his town being destroyed. NO ONE ELSE ever seems to be phased by threats more than "oh no! a big nomster! Go get it, hunter!"

you got a real MC complex going on right now. your thread is about the opinions of the many. i made a response saying your interpretation of the many is flawed. i represented an alternative interpretation of the many. you countered in the singular.

Steam forum bros thinking a small child who watched their family all ♥♥♥♥♥♥ die should be stoic and show no emotion ever. Etc.

I've yet to run into a kid that doesn't flip the ♥♥♥♥ out when i respond to their pokemon ranting with "yeah but that one isn't viable in competitive" If they refuse to shut up about it.

How exactly could Nata be less central to the story in JP compared to English when he literally gets the same amount of cutscene time and dialogue? Only thing localisation changes it English.

I find it funny how people like you always try to blame everything on localisation because you can’t accept the fact that anything made in your conservative paradise of Japan could be in any way “woke”.

It's my thread, you are personally attacking me to mischaracterize me because what I said revealed to you things about yourself that you do not want to hear. "why are you mad if it isn't true!" because you came in my thread, referred to me specifically, and then projected for what seems to be 5 "replies" straight now.

I really don't care about nata other than his existence offends me because his english localization characterization is clearly a self-insert of a very specific type of person, I REALLY don't like how the game does not allow you to disagree with him.

you openly claim that you don't like nata. you also claim (somehow) that "I" don't like him because I "identify" with him. Uh huh.

Again, projection won't absolve, and I don't like playing scapegoat nor will I ever!

all you are doing is trying to start trouble, and all it has achieved so far is that you somehow look more agitated than when you started. the next scapegoating attempt won't be the one to magically doom me into your place. I Promise that.

Or.. people dislike him because he's not white. Because this is the Steam forums, and I've seen plenty of evidence over the last 15 years to suggest that could be the legitimate reason.
I remember when the live action mermaid movie was coming out I remarked that the skin tone was going to be the least of the problems. Seems to be a trend. Localization teams changing story tones for their ideology isn't new.
this doesnt apply nata isnt a established character
