depends on the monster - but more things will be vulnerable to blast than dragon
as a veteran, I think LR & HR are quiet easy, so... go with the fashion you like
easiest mh to date either choice will be more than enough
I've made two blast longsword at rarity 8. You get occasional procs of 150 damage added on top of your current damage. I would say it is a good general use weapon. My newest one went for 3 affinity infusions and running crit status.

i prefer paralysis, its super op, it procs lot of times, my experiences with paralysis wasnt like this in previous games. paralysis+constant focus hits on wounds is like stunlock. sometimes i kill tempereds in 3-5mins. apexes take a bit longer like 7-10 mins.

but im sure all elements viable, except sleep, idk why devs put sleep on weapons.

blast and paralysis are solid "general purpose" weapons you can use on basically any monster. poison decent too.

elements depend on the monster's resistance - you'd be foolish to use an Ice weapon against Jin Dahaad, for example, but Blast and Para are both solid against it. a Fire weapon would probably be better overall since Jin is weak to it, but it wouldn't be as good against Nu Udra as your blast or para weapon would.

sleep on weapon is only good if you play around it with bombs, or a weapon like Greatsword. and you also have to depend on other players not accidentally waking the monster with a weak attack. getting a bunch of bombs and/or a fully charged TCS on a sleeping monster gives it a -fat- damage boost, you can easily break 1000 damage in a single hit.
element are only good for specific monster... blast is the way to go or paralysis for me
