Why Wilds is the worst mainline game so far
This post does not relate to the optimisation problems - although they probably won't be fixed anytime soon they are technically fixable, whereas the actual issues with this game are not in my opinion.

Me and my brothers have been playing MH since PS2, every game/every console, so it's hard for me to accept this, given the amount of hype we had building up to release.

Every single aspect of what makes Monster Hunter unique is to some degree diminished from this game.

The hunts are now significantly easier, to the point that any half decent vet could quite easily go the full length of low rank wearing starter armour and without carting - this change alone should be enough for a pause of concern, given that on titles before World, this would be incredibly challenging.

The lax difficulty means that grinding for better equipment or even consumable items is no longer a "necessity", it has become more of a "choice" for fun or fashion reasons.

The core game-play loop has thus changed to the point where you have no longer have a "reason" to hunt anything multiple times- it's like playing Skyrim on easy and you can't level up; Your just plodding along, button mashing.

And honestly, I could have accepted this and been happy if that's all it was - I can make the game artificially harder by wearing low defence armour and I can find a reason to play by helping new players and my friends.

The material drop rates for rare items are now guaranteed and the items needed to upgrade your equipment have been reduced, which makes the above difficulty situation even harder to deal with, as the only "reason" left for me to keep playing is by helping friends and new players - which now complete their builds in far shorter time and hunts, thus diminishing the "need" to grind from the core game-play loop once again.

I won't name everything else but things like the farm, the felyne cooks, the BBQ theme song, gathering hub, the funny weapons/armour/quests, the quest structure and the overall Japanese style/theme are completely gone.

These may seem trivial to some, but when you actually think about what monster hunter is; once you take away the little things, it's just a game where you simply hunt monsters and make weapons and armour from their materials. Furthermore, once you make the "necessity" of this loop redundant and instead turn it more into a "unrewarding choice",
the "reason" has gone and your left with a "Cinematic Button Masher" instead of a "Strategic Rouge-like, Action RPG".

The westernisation of the game didn't need to strip down all these things this far- the game would have done incredibly well on the back of World, which is ultimately the start of the downfall in my opinion.

That's not to say I don't enjoy playing Wilds - I absolutely love playing it, but in my opinion, it's the worst MH mainline game, period.

I just hope the portable team never stray this far from the original idea of Monster Hunter and keep delivering honest titles.

Rant Over.

Wilds is the best-feeling Monster Hunter game to actually play to-date by a long shot. Everything is faster paced and more dynamic and more centered around players having control over what they’re doing at any given moment. I do not care about what weak arguments you have to give for why minor aesthetics changes that have changed with every single release of this franchise “ruins” the game for you.
dont think thats the logical definition ppl come to when hearing " Rouge-like "
its random generated levels hm no check for wilds here

it has no real "save" and after you die or so you more or less restart from the start also no check for wilds

that in conclusion means using " Rouge-like " couldnt be worse as description since it doesnt fulfill any of the points needed for the way ppl get the genre . . .

But he's right, i upgraded my Armor once in Low Rank - i farmed Uth Duna before i was "allowed" to Hunt it.
Used the Low Rank Armor till High Rank Uth was available, i never hunted a Monster in low Rank twice - what was the purpose of doing so? - None, got everything for the Weapons, more wasnt needed.

Gathering hub was literally announced to be coming in the title 1 update the day before launch (with felyne chefs in the preview images btw) and being mad about the meat cooking song changing again is very silly.

Also what do you mean silly armor sets and japanese theming are missing? Nerscylla armor makes you look like a gundam. The Hirabini/Rey Dau sets are based on Japanese temple outfits, Ajarakan's set has a whole Son Wu-kong vibe going on. There's asian influence everywhere.

The meme weapons usually don't appear until later title updates, Cornpopper usually shows up on the supply ship, etc like in World/Rise.

Gathering hub - should have been in the release version, no excuses.

Meme armor/weapons sets - Yes they do come with TU's and event quests but there are none in the release version apart from the Tuna GS....think Wiggler helmet.

Japanese theme - this doesn't need explaining.

Felyne chefs & meat cooking song - it's not silly, it's MH.

These points are the lesser of 2 evils compared to everything else.

There are multiple silly hats if you take the time to actually carve the small monsters, and capture endemic life.

World/rise didn't have the gathering hub until update 1 either. World didn't even have poogie until it's first launch update actually.

That's what it was though....

Strategy = preparing for a hunt with items, elemental weaknesses, etc.

Rouge-like = the game-play loop where each run/hunt you get stronger. Yes it's not got all the aspects of a rougelike, but it has some.

Action RPG = upgrading armor and fighting.
Rouge like implies it's like a particular shade of red.
I'm glad someone gets it.

If we're actually talking about roguelikes, then that's not what they are. At all.
Or at least they shouldn't be, but it definitely lost its meaning over the years on Steam for sure.
Roguelite was just too minor/clever of a thing to call them I suppose.
I thought Rise was still the worst mainline game.

Give me a hug bro, I totally feel your pain. I've been playing since MHF2 and this game is sadly the worst by far.

Tho, I wouldn't keep my hopes very high for the portable team unless it's about combat mechanics (they always nail it on that), because if you think about it, most problems and lose of identity in Wilds where already showing on Rise with the map, mounting and in general streamlined hunts mostly focused on combat and nothing else.

World at least had some of the old vibes looking the monster and a few things. Rise went on the other direction but it's what portable team always does focusing on just fun combat, not the mainline team, which threw everything away now with Wilds.

Thanks bro, just had to get it off my chest.

In my opinion Rise brought back some of the soul of the game after World removed it...and the changes they made, like the DMC combat still was in keeping with the theme.
I'd much prefer 3/4U remasters over anything new next.

It wasn’t a mainline game. It was a lower budget between-titles release for the Switch.

It's cool if you didn't like the game OP. See you in the next one, maybe.

Why does World have 5 dragon heads and Wilds not have Seven then?

But it's not just about aesthetics.....And don't even talk to me about control.....You literally can't miss anymore.

Sorry but MH was MEANT to be clunky controlled, your meant to miss and your meant to cart if you do so, that's what made the fighting so good - risk/reward.

As for it being fast paced well it is with Dual Blades, but everything feels much slower with slower weapons....it's no different in this regard than MHGU.

Because Rise doesn't introduce a new genereation. Your made-up justifications for self segregation don't matter.

Capcom themselves consider Rise mainline.

for some people the newest one will always be the worst compared to their favourite in the series.
