Gemma makes no sense as a part of the main cast...

I have multiple problems with the story, with it dragging out pointless scenes, palicoes not speaking their own language, and other minor details.

But personally I am really bothered by the fact that Gemma goes everywhere with the hunter, Alma makes sense since she's your handler, the boy whose name I forgot, I guess since he would be able to identify parts of the terrain due to him being native to the region. But Gemma? Why does the smith travel with the hunter? She seems to be one of the main smiths in the expedition, her not being in base camp could massively delay the weapon supply chain for the rest of the expedition. Another thing that is of concern, is that she seems to have no combat ability, I could assume that handlers are trained on how to properly get away from monsters and not get in the way of their hunter when they're fighting, but a smith?

I'm sorry but if every hunter had a smith constantly following them not only would there need to be WAY more smiths in the guild (possibly even more smiths than hunters), not to mention the risk of smiths dying due to a small mistake, or even some unexpected situation. The hunter can't protect everyone if something goes wrong, they're just human after all...

I had the same thought before I realized each team is a team of 4: The Hunter (Player/Olivia), The Handler (Alma/Erik), The Smith (Gemma/Werner), The Palico (Player Palico/Fluffy, Destroyer of Monsters)

Gemma is Avis Units Smith just like Werner is Olivia's units Smith

You can peice it together as the hunter from U4 jumped for a hat and she references that you remind her of him. Also Ace the lancer is pretty obvious and says he grew up knowing Gemma. Gemma is little miss forge. Fabius is Ace. There is also a scene of her old hammer if it's still not enough to convince you

Little Miss Forge wasn't there when the 4U hunter jumped for the hat as she wasn't part of the caravan at that time. The rest of it I can't refute. I'd love it if she was little miss forge except that means we have a mature older Sophia somewhere and I need her to step on me and call me Doodle.

this is actually a misconception, gemma isn't following the hunter at all. she's actually following alma because they're girlfriends. they engage in extremely passionate make out sessions while you're off hunting the target monster (gemma can only get in the mood if something is dying within earshot).

She is your Smith, and you are in a foreign land, she even has her mobile Smithy she talks about for this reason. Because you weren't native and no way to know what to expect, she is sent to help forge for the hunter.

That's pretty much what I got from her being there.

Yes, they had no way to know what would be available in other lands, so they sent mobile smiting stations with us from my understanding.

That's pretty much what I got from her being there.

Not to mention that she was the one handling establishing camps at checkpoints whenever we reached an unknown environment.
