Monster Capturing; retcon or just MHWilds?
I've noticed an obvious difference between MHWorld & MHWilds when a quest ends with a captured monster.

In MHWorld, the bonked monster is dragged off to the main camp, where it is either butchered more efficiently, or even served "ikizukuri" style to hangry hunters.

In MHWild, the monster takes a "nonconsenual" nap for 1 min, then awakens and staggers off into the sunset...

Is MHWild's monster capture a change to capture lore? Or is it just its own thing?

Alma will study a captured monster for longer than a dead one, so the idea is in wilds, because the research commission doesn't have nearly as big a presence, is that all of it is done on the fly, since it's all that can be afforded

Yeah, I got the feeling that the research commission is flying by the seat of their pants, compared to MHWorld.

I want more Monster bbq ribs though!

I don't think monsters pass the Harkness Test.
... Felynes do though.

I don't think we have the infrastructure to keep Captured Monsters in Wilds, so presumably they're all catch-and-release canonically..... which probably also contributed to the insane notion of making half the mandatory story assignments Slay Quests.

But I never cared for canon anyway. My Captured monsters go to my Monster Zoo.... which assuming I have a single zoo for the entire series, has a few hundred Brachydios in it at this point. I guess it is more of a Safari Park now.

I meant bonked with a hammer to the head. Cartoon tv sound effect style.

You know...like Tom & Jerry?

Monsters are, in past games, taken to be researched by the guild. Live examinations are extremely important, and allows for research. What happens after the fact is unknown. We know that the wealthy do have monsters as pets. Headcanon for many is that theyre taken to the arena to challenge hunters and train. Other possibilities is that they are killed, and salvaged, or they are released back into the wild (unlikely due to the danger of monsters becoming familiar with humans).

I'm pretty sure all the monster getting up and leaving really is, is the game saving on memory and despawning the monster. Wouldn't look at that act as too much of a lore action as it is just video game logic.

I got that vibe when it came to the arena stuff in MHWorld. Aka the gross and nasty tasting monsters got dumped there.

MHWild's arena feels more like...the monsters kinda wandered in, and are stuck. Either the hunter puts them out of their misery, or they starve to death. Then, another monster wanders in, tempted by the smell of carrion....and the system repeats.

So.... smashed?

Mine definitely go to the zoo. A zoo full of monsters broken in body and spirit. Too many parts smashed off to even qualify as Tempered. Just like the animals in a real zoo. They are there to be screeched at by children until they die of disease due to the overpacked enclosures.

In MHWorld...captured monsters just fade away....

I'm now sure how I feel about breaking the knee caps of a random monster, cutting off its horns & tail, then watching it limp off into the jungle. Feels like overkill. Just bonk it and get it over with, Rathian steaks for dinner...again...yay...

I guess if you use a bone hammer of another monster, it's non penetration necro smashing.

I don't know what chef would buy those steaks from you though...kinda really non-existent market...

Or just regular smashing the monster on the head with a hammer....
... as opposed to bonking....

[Disclaimer: I'm playing on the fact that British and American slang are reversed as regards those two words. I considered not mentioning it, but I figured that someone might get confused...]

It's implied that the monsters are butchered since you get parts but to me it's always been just abstraction to compensate for the fact that capturing is a more involved process than just killing.

But in MHWild, after 1min the monster gets up and skedaddles away!

Unless...is the monster heading off to the main camp? Is this some weird native voodoo magic going on here?

I never interpreted it that way.
I just figured once the monster is sleeping you can just sorta... scavenge surface-level parts off it without waking it up or something..... which would have been explained by Capture rewards being different to Carves in past games.

In MHWild you capture monster so you can skip the carving animation and save up to 40 seconds waiting (because some players will just refuse to press skip for whatever reason).

And also, to spite slay-only players.
