It's not designed to do one big smack like a Greatsword.
The most basic thing is to charge your shots. Don't just spam shots. If you hold down the button the weapon will flash a few times and allow you to fire a higher-level shot with more arrows and more damage PER arrow. If you dodge while aiming you retain your current charge level without having to recharge it... so these days playing Bow is largely about dodging, firing, dodging, firing, etc.
After a normal shot you can press B twice to fire two Power Shots, but since Wilds is basically a World clone, those power shots are spread out and not much good at long range. Some clowns make an entire style out of only using power shots, Spread decos and close range coatings, but they neglect to account for the fact that spending time chasing the monster around to stay in range is time spent NOT doing damage...
Power Coatings are more reliable since they don't cripple your range, and you should ideally be keeping the coatings equipped constantly since that also boosts the damage of every arrow and is multiplied by number of arrows and charge level. There are also Pierce Coatings, but those don't actually boost your damage so much as spread it through the monster's body, making it easier to hit weak points through the monster when they're at awkward angles (also I suspect it might proc wounds more often, but I haven't confirmed yet).
Besides that you should always be shooting at the weakest shot or elemental hitzone on a monster. Don't just spam arrows anywhere and everywhere (another problem with the close range build).
It is not the bow which sucks.

Honestly, just need to have the right armor build, gem build, and combat strat. Otherwise, you're just gonna be flailing around with *insert_weapon*.
Bow main btw. I don't get why anyone would attack a trex with a dagger. Shoot big arrows, at least the meat is now halfway to kebab.
In fact I think the game might be fundamentally broken in that respect since I can now dodge better with HBG than I can with LBG... which is just wacky...
Old Bow had a far simpler moveset and was much simpler to use in general between the less dynamic nature of the game and the infinite stamina from Dash Juice back then. There was more thought required in actually picking a Bow and making an armour build for it back then though, since every Bow had different shot types for each charge level. Also it actually used to feel more like proper archery back then.
Since World Bow has been far more forgiving of misuse since even if you just spam arrows mindlessly it cycles through the charge levels rather than just firing continuously uncharged shots... and al sorts of other things can increase or maintain charge level (power shots, dodging, etc). Additionally the preparation has been massively dumbed down, and in spite of Rise temporarily reverting back to different shot-types per Bow, as it currently stands the only subtle difference between one Bow and the next are the Coatings available.
That said, all that dumbing down (and it really is dumbing down) has made for a far more frantic, spam-focused moveset, and stamina management is the most difficult it has ever been. So while the Bow requires far less thought than it used to, it requires far more button input....
... In short, they've turned the Bow into a sugar-rush kiddy weapon and effectively made it far more difficult for arthritic old bastards like me to use it.
You're doing something wildly wrong.
if you add the fact bow is quite reasonably good with causing and maxing wounds, add partbreaker and a couple of other gems like flayer and the likes and you can make a build that relies on wounds and part breaking for most of the damage, spamming your loot chest with mostly useless crap in the meantime.
but jokes aside, bow is about as good at part breaking as bowguns, the damage is reasonably good and since its a ranged weapon you get the advantage of staying safe and aiming where it hurts, while also not having to fuss about with ammo reserves, considering coatings are now all infinite. add the incredible dodging skill that also charges your shots while you avoid damage makes you deal almost constant damage during a fight. sure, you may not have the damage spikes a gs has for example, but you don't have its downtimes either.
also, i forgot the name of the skill, but try adding those gems to your armor that give you affinity when perfect dodging, they work quite well with the charging dodges the bow has.
