The gems were much more difficult to acquire and they were never guaranteed.
Wilds however is obviously catered towards a more casual player base with drop rates, investigation rewards, and absolutely broken armour skills before Master Rank even arrives. (Arkveld, Zoh Shia. These sets basically make you almost unkillable if used correctly.)
I don't expect them to backtrack on this method they have implemented. So roll around in your cool armour :)
Since World, completing armour sets has been comically easy.
Used to be you'd have to do up to 50 hunts just to get a single rare item to complete and armour set or weapon.
I didn't much care for that, but there were also parts you could only get from breaking specific monster parts. As in there was NO OTHER WAY than breaking that bodypart to get that item. Most tail items used to be like that. You'd need to cut off the tail and carve a tail item in order to complete an armour set. Horns? Same. Claws? Often, yes.
PLUS there used to be separate armour sets for Blademaster & Gunner weapons with a separate appearance and separate skills... so if you wanted to change weapon type, you'd need to craft a whole new armour set.
These days you can get absolutely everything a monster can give you in fewer than 5 hunts by just mindlessly damaging it wherever until it ded. Nuance and focus have been phased out in the name of "Quality of Life".
I don't care for the exclusivist mindset, and I certainly don't judge the worth of an armour set by how many people are wearing it... but I hate that you no longer have to pay attention to what you're breaking in a hunt.
Artificial time waste mechanics were never my favorite, much less so nowadays when plenty of games have shown you can actually have fun without ♥♥♥♥ like that.
honestly though if we can notch the tempered monsters up just a tad, make us really work for our Hunter Symbol III's, then that's enough for me.
If you dont want to be in flashy armor so fast...just dont make it until you are...you 100% have control over what you wear at any point.
MH has always been a game where the hunt is the focus not the material gathering.
