This is the worst Monster Hunter game ever made.
After 13 hours I gave up. I haven't even cared for playing this game. This is the first Monster Hunter game I really don't care about. I've bought every single game at launch since I learned about this franchise (that being MH Tri on Wii) but MH Wilds simply... isn't Monster Hunter. I understand they want to add a "narrative" experience to cater to the west but in doing so they just removed the soul of the game. We are no longer hunters, exploring the environment and learning about each species as we go. We are now just guys who have weapons and kill everything we find. Lore-wise this game also is just meh. Gameplay-wise there's nothing new except focus mode to make everything easier. What happened to MH? This franchise was great because it was a Monster Hunter simulator!! Now it's just a Playstation-like movie experience that is just boring and soulless. Not to mention the horrible UIs and complications to play with friends that detract the experience. Old Monster Hunter is gone, we've killed it.

I believe what OP is saying is that the design philosophy for Wilds is different enough from the previous entries that despite both being called "monster hunter" in name the two games are different.

Legacy Monster Hunter (aka pre World):
-Story is "optional" (aka you can skip it)
-Strong emphasis on prehunt preparation. Penalties for being "underprepared" and rewards for being prepared.
-Player is underpowered
-Environment actively hostile to Player
-Blademaster armor has higher defense, gunner armor has lower defense.
-Normal (1) has infinite ammo. Must craft other ammo.
-Player nudged to interact with the online community to clear hunts faster since hub monsters are scaled for multiple players by default. High probability you will make friends as you progess online. Can join any hunt so long as HR is high enough even if you are not far enough in the story.

Wilds:
-Story is mandatory. You can skip cutscenes however unskippable on rails "walking simulators" that modern games nortiously do to exposition dump
-Weak emphasis on prehunt preparation. Items delivered when "underprepared"
-Player is overpowered
-Environment actively supportive of player with plenty of health, traps, status, etc.
-Blademaster and gunner armor share defense
-Normal (1,2,3), Pirece (1,2,3) Spread (1,2,3) has infinite ammo. Must craft other ammo
-Player nudged to play solo as monsters are scaled for a single player (Ai companions available) Story mode actively stands in the way of progression with friends. Restrictions on players joining hunts if they have not reached that point in the story. SOS board replaces interactions with the community

On the surface, yeah, you hunt monsters and make armor/weapons however "under the hood" one could argue these are two separate games with the same name.

Especially the online experience. If you had the privilege of playing MH3 online during the golden era there is a night and day difference with the community. For example back then if a player was struggling with a monster it was, "oh you are struggling with [x]? Post it. Let's hunt it together." Nowadays it is "oh you are struggling with [x]? Git gud" or critiquing the player's build. Wilds (modern Monster hunter in general) is obsessed with "efficiency" aka trying to complete a hunt as fast as possible. Everyone is trying to be a speed runner. Back then "fun" was not how quickly you could complete a quest. Heck, even with limited items, in was not uncommon for hunters to ignore the target monster simply because another monster showed up aka "Rathian you decided to interrupt the wrong quest" Players who were dissatisfied with "difficulty" would actually abandon their armor and hunt nude. Post World people were claiming returning fans simply had "nostalgia glasses" however i have ran into players who started with World or Rise go back and play MH3U and acknowledge and/or admire what legacy Monster Hunter was and what the newer titles lost.
10/10 reply. This pretty much sums up everything wrong about Wilds!!

Agree. Solid post that sums things up quite well.

Fun is subjective. does it actually sum it up quite well. I read that as people problems and not the games problem aside from performance.

wait when was the story optional?

Wilds is the first mohun game that can lock you into an area, tell you "no you're not hunting, you gotta do this interactive cutscene" and not let you even do an expedition until you've watched Nata cry enough. You can't even train your weapon if the game decides it's story time.

In previous games the player was always in control of what they were doing at any given time, and you could just mash through exposition.
idk why they just dont skip story part and let us hunt
They made a more narrative experience to cater to western gamers. Eastern gamers generally don't care about story, it's more grind and skill cap they care about and competition

Skill issue
Do you even collect 10 special mushrooms, bro? I know I don’t even feel like a hunter if I’m not following a pig in the forest after it consumes local mushrooms.
You're not a hunter.

Not true, you are free to do what ever you want. You just force yourselves into the story. Same like World too. You are force to do the main story quests in order to progress.

In preview game before World is the same thing too. You also force to do certain quest in order to progress the rank or story.
