Longsword Auto-Sheate
Hey guys, new Player here
I'm playing with the longsword and I'm a little bit confused/annoyed.
Everytime I finish my R2->R2->R2 roundhouse slash thingy my weapon gets automatically put away and also after each fully charged helm-breaker combo I'm left with the weapon on my back.
Is this intended behaviour?
Seems counterintuitive to me to put the weapon away when I'm right infront of my opponent. Also losing the toggle on focus mode and having to animation-lock myself into another attack just so I can Focus and R1 again if there are still wounds is also a bit tedious.
Am I doing something wrong here?
Any advice is welcome :)

Yes. It has been that way since at least MH3U (the first MH game I played).

It is part of the coolness mechanic and is actually used for stronger moves. Check later on skills for quick sheath, critical draw and staggering draw.

Oh alright, I guess I have to adjust to that then.

Is there another way of getting my weapon back into my hands other than attacking?

Press Y

(Yes)
Some advice: after your spirit roundslash (the move that autosheathes after the big sweep), you can use Right Trigger + X (ps controller)/A(Xbox controller) to enter Special Sheathe. It lets you flow pretty naturally into further combos. Keep in mind that if you stay in special sheathe for too long, your hunter will put their weapon away.

In this game just mashing Attack makes you keep attacking instead of the Sheathe. But like mentioned you actually get options for other moves at that point. Because if your gonna use a Katana you have to look cool by attacking from the Sheathe all the cool kids do it.
It's like in samurai movies/anime when they whip out the katana or wakizashi, and in the act of whipping it out, slaughter everyone around them, and then the samurai does the little wrist flick/turn thing to get some blood off it before instantly, promptly sheathing it.
After Spirit Roundslash (4th combo of Spirit Slash), on top of pressing either your Triangle/Y or Circle/B button to keep attacking without sheathing, you can also just... roll away if you don't feel like keep attacking.

Additionally, once you are in Red Gauge, you get a fifth attack for Spirit Slash, called the Crimson Spirit Slash. This one won't sheath your weapon after doing it.

Spirit Releash Slash sheating, which follows a Helmbreaker during Red Gauge and pressing the Spirit Slash button, is unavoidable.
No, you can't literally do nothing and have your weapon in your hand. As people mentioned, your options are

Special Sheathe
Y or B (B is the fastest way to get into neutral again)
Y+B (fade flash)
dodge
Focus strike
helm break (but ok why would you do that).

You can also ask why the hell does our character sheathe our weapon after doing the mount finisher

Round slash will always sheath your weapon no matter how you get there.

If you do one of your two regular attacks right at the end of the round slash it will cancel the auto sheath.
