"Background Frame Rate" setting in Monster Hunter Wilds
Hi, I have a question regarding the Frame Rate settings in the game.

From what I understand, the “Background Frame Rate” option likely refers to limiting the FPS only when the game window is not active, such as when switching to a browser or going to the desktop. This explanation seems consistent with multiple sources I’ve found, including AI chat tools.

However, here’s what made me confused:

When I play the game with the window active, and I manually set the Background Frame Rate to a low value (e.g., 15 FPS),
I start noticing that some elements in the background — especially when rotating the camera — appear to flicker or stutter.
This made me wonder… could it be that this setting also affects the frame rate of background objects in the game world, like NPCs or environment elements that aren’t the player or monsters?

So I’d like to ask clearly: Does Background Frame Rate only limit FPS when the game is minimized or not focused/active?

Thank you in advance! 🙏

I have no idea where you got while inactive from because the setting clearly states it's the distance and rate at which Animation Halfing occurs.

Thank you very much for the explanation!

What you said about Background Frame Rate being tied to the rate of Animation Halving for distant objects really lines up with what I was seeing.

When I lowered the Background Frame Rate value and rotated the camera in-game, I noticed that background elements or characters not directly involved (like NPCs or scenery) seemed to animate at a lower frame rate or even flicker a bit.
At the time, I wasn’t sure if I was imagining things — but your explanation confirms it for me.

Really appreciate you taking the time to clarify this 🙏

there is absolutely an inactive window framerate option though

Fairly certain each is rather clearly labelled and text-box explained.

Indeed.
