I don't know why they didn't bring over all of the customization options from Worlds and Rise. Aren't sequels supposed to be the evolution of the previous games? Capcom had no excuse. This game started development in 2018. There's no excuse why this game didn't launch with features that were already available in past games.

Probably. They seem focused on turning MH, little by little, into a complete live service game where they can drip-feed you content and milk you for microtransactions.

I did find it interesting that they used the wording "Free Title Update" as it implies they are, at least behind the scenes, floating the idea of having TUs that are not free. And no, an expansion is not a title update.

Or it could just be their way of specifying the content is a Free update. And not an expansion. So people don't go asking "How much for the expansion"? I doubt they'll do 'Paid Title updates'. This is just their way of expanding on the game for a couple of years before adding some mass expansion

The phrasing really hasnt changed, theyve been called free Title Updates since MHW. Theyre officially called Title Update #, but theyre referred to as free because the "Paid Update" is the expansion.

It appears you are correct. I found this post on Steam. It's not in the title but the body text does refer to "next free title update"

Not historically. They seem to be very inconsistent. That's why the confusion.

I only checked out maybe about 6 or 7 posts, but only a single one used the term "free title update" while the rest simply called it a "title update".
