Monster Hunter Wilds

Wilds feels like a poor sequel to World
I started Monster Hunter with World and then moved on to Rise and started loving that. Both World and Rise have a difficulty to them in different ways that come down to the type of playstyle you prefer. I loved playing through World for the atmosphere and the in depth hunting mechanics that made you feel like an explorer but I also loved the Wirebug mechanics and Switch Skill mechanics of Rise that offered interesting builds and playstyles. I was looking forward to this game expecting World again but with next gen changes. Well I honestly feel like this game isn't close to World really and feels pretty ♥♥♥♥ in a lot of ways and just much, much to easy. I'm going to separate everything into bullet points of good and bad to make it easier to read and not look like a large clump of text.

~ (World Design: The Good) The game seems like its an actual open world now and the maps seem to be connected without any loading screens allowing for a seamless transition between two different maps. Now it isn't a great open world as it just has a singular small point connecting the two maps but it is a step in a good direction. The main hub or hubs are put seamlessly in the maps as well which are cool and makes them feel a part of the world. They are a bit small and unimpressive however...

~ (World Design: The Bad) The maps feel mostly like the old Monster Hunter games. You know those old Gen 4 and under games where the maps are just 10 separate small maps connected by loading screens. That's what Wilds kinda feels like to me, just a map with areas connected by corridors/lines. Also the maps feel kinda boring to me. Can't really put my finger on it but I don't feel excited to explore them like I was in World maps.

~ (Gameplay/Combat: The Good) Well I would like to say good things about it but honestly there isn't a lot of good thoughts coming to mind with the gameplay. The bow no longer has ammo that needs crafting and I somewhat like that, however its just an easy and dumbed down system that wasn't thought out much... The hookshot being able to grab materials now is a good plus. I enjoy doing that a lot. Other than that, I can't think of much that stands out from previous games.

~ (Gameplay/Combat: The Bad) The number one thing that killed it and multiplayer for me in Wilds would be the Focus Mode stuff. Focus Mode is the most overpowered and dumbed down mechanic in this game that allows you to correct attacks that would of missed and break monster parts insanely easily while doing both KO damage and interrupting the monster entirely. Weapons with hard hitting attacks generally have a risk/reward to them. Weapons such as Greatsword's TCS and Charge Blade's SAED both are hard hitting moves that do a lot of damage but lock you in once you get to the end of the combo, so if you don't time them right you can either get punished or you can miss. With Focus Mode, you can immediately change the direction of these attacks in which makes the whole "learning monster movesets and movements to know when to combo" go out the window. You don't have to know what the monster is going to do because you can just change the direction mid or end combo to get the hit on it anyways. Takes the skill out of the game... Then there is the part break mechanic of Focus Mode where you can target red damaged parts of the body and with a press of a button just instantly do a lot of damage while doing KO damage and interrupting all attacks and movements the monster was doing. It is incredibly broken and in multiplayer is just a joke as the monster literally is doing nothing but getting street jumped while curled up on the ground. It literally makes multiplayer nothing more than a "Lets get free stuff" kinda thing.

~ (Graphics: The Good) The graphics currently in the game are bugged and the performance is unoptimized as hell. Outside of that, the graphics in the game look good. The world and environments look pretty and amazing because of it. Bloom can make thunderstorms look menacing, the reflections of light and bloom on water can make it look like crystal jello, and the shading in game can make grasslands look nice.

~ (Graphics: The Bad) The one thing about the graphics being bad is how dark it can get and how the shading can make seeing attacks and things going on screen hard to see. I've had multiple times underground where seeing AOEs on the ground were tough and I would get hit because of it. I do feel like the graphics of MH:World were better imo.

~ (Story: The Bad) Yeah there wasn't a Good section for this one. There is nothing good about this story... This thing puts you on rails with no way of skipping all the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ time and it forces so much into your face. It's such an out of touch with the fanbase kinda thing that makes you wonder whether Capcom understands what Monster Hunter is about in the first place.

That's the end of my opinions on the game and hopefully brought up some points to look into for those wondering if they want to play it or not. I didn't mention everything as it would just go on for far too long and honestly I felt like I touched enough on the major things one would want to know about for a Monster Hunter game.

Post this in an actual steam review instead of spamming the forums with your blog post.
That's because it's a sequel to 4U and not World.

Fabius is the Ace Lancer from 4U
Gemma is "Little Miss Smith" from 4U (she's wearing the Caravaneer's Jacket, she has a Kut-Ku doll likely made by Sophia the Guildmarm, she references a hunter you remind her of, she references being called "Lil Miss" or "Lil", she uses her signature hammer in one of the cutscenes)
Gore Magala and the Frenzy virus make a return in the story.
You travel to multiple villages and help them out with their problems, like in 4U.
you should probably mention that you were not able to actually skip ANY CUTSCENE in world, being forced to watch every single cutscene and that insanely long credit scene for both base game and iceborne, taking up probably half the playtime of the campaign making the world campaign such a SLOG. Wilds is def better in that case, even with the void that is the story.

I also prefer that all the unlocks are part of the endgame in wilds and not forced on you during the story like world, making it really easy for players who just wanna skip to the good bit to miss out on very important systems. Like i remember getting to alatreon before i even started trying to get any of the mantles and ingredients because i kind of did not know they existed.

EDIT: I did not know the quests for these items existed, not the items themselves.

I meant gameplay/graphics wise but that is interesting. I literally just got into 4U as well. Emulation of course cause I wanted a proper controller but thus far its really fun.
The tunnels between the major areas are so long that they are basically loading screens.
The story and characters are good, actually.

Yeah that was right. I forgot about that and now that you mention it, I do remember getting annoyed as ♥♥♥♥ about the introduction pissing me off with how long it was. Dunno if Iceborne changed it and added skipping or something. You would be right however as Wilds would not be nearly as bad as World was. There are good things that Wilds did that were definite improvements but I felt that they killed the game with the things they put in as well. Perhaps they can patch/balance things out enough to make the game be a game again. Right now it is too much of a punching bag simulator...

The auto-rails Thomas the bird engine made it feel less long than it was... Lol

That’s because they are. It’s one of many common tricks to hide loading screens in modern games.
I will admit I hate focus mode, makes timing not as important if at all.

They are very good at being bad, I truly agree
Had to skip entire cutscenes to escape it, they were more difficult to watch than it was to fight all the monsters in this game.
