Character save gone?

Spent an embarrassingly long time creating a character that I had saved the other day.

Load up today to play and it's gone ... is there any way to recover it?

Where would the file even be?

Yeah, I fell for this too. Unfortunately, the game doesn't actually save the preset until you make a hard save - user presets are apparently stored in the save data file itself. Good couple of hours down the drain there.
