Does Alma suffer from white saviour syndrome?
She quickly adopts the different villagers hand gestures(among other things) without having any clue what they mean or if its even appropriate for her to use them. Plus her constant need to overdeliver in the villagers problems and trying to save the day/etc

Honestly Alma makes me cringe hard.

I love how everyone saying shes just being respectful completely missed the part where i said in OP that she has no clue what said hand gestures meant. In the REAL world we know what japanese head bow means. Almas appropriate response to the hand gestures would've been to ask what it meant and if it was ok for her to use them. THATS how you show respect to a different/new culture you just met without giving off cringy white saviour vibes.
And how, exactly, do you know she didn't ask? After all, she's been talking with Nata, who's from the region. And then she spent time traveling back to basecamp with the brother, during which time she could have asked. Additionally, the usage in context makes the meaning fairly obvious.

Seems more to me like you just really want to be offended for some reason.

Nah. If I was in a random village that was being cool and didn't immediately eat me, I'd be copying it all too lol. If you do something wrong oh you'll know.

Isn't Alma the one who advocates for giving the people of the Forbidden Lands a say in their fate right before the final boss? She takes pretty great care to never overstep, and even Fabius states that they shouldn't extend any olive branches unless the people there reach out first.

I was worried how the game would handle the plot at first because MH doesn't exactly handle writing very well, so it would've been extremely easy to be a colonialism plot. I was pleasantly surprised by how nuanced they managed to make it despite the limited focus on anything not involving monsters and the incredibly cheesy execution.

It was used as a greeting and a thanks multiple time's.
I saw it used more as a 'thank you' or a paying of respects. I don't recall any of them using it when they first met some one, it was always in regards to thanking them for saving Nota, or to pay respects to something else. Unless I missed the part where they came up to the Hunter and just used the gesture to say 'hi'.

They used this gesture a few times before the village, even i knew what it was. Obviously a greeting gesture.

I've seen some snowflakes on the internet but getting upset by something like this is insane, Its just part of the characters personality, always wanting to help, do good, respect and learn about other cultures. Some would find this endearing, others insulting. But doesn't matter as it absolutely fits her character and the type of person she is. It would be more weird to me if she didn't do it.

Another case of white people thinking that another white person learning and partaking in another culture is bad. If the people she's interacting with aren't offended, why are you?

In real life, something you probably don't have much experience with, when you meet someone from another culture and they greet you with a phrase or gesture, you imitate it in kind. A lot of the time, both sides do the same greeting/gesture. Like in English a simple, "Mornin" from both sides is enough. If you misuse it then they usually tell you or correct you. I've been on the other end of, "I appreciate the gesture, but you only say this when you're welcoming someone. You would instead respond with -blank-" And then I do it over with the appropriate response and we're cool. Normally people do the research before visiting a place they don't know, but in the game's case they literally didn't even know about these people. Also, most cultures know that the foreigners might not know all the proper ways to interact, so they are understanding and eager to teach. Not every country is so quick to offend.

bruh naw. quit with this dirt-tier bait. it isn't even good - she sees the gesture used once, determines its meaning (as a scholar WOULD) and then uses it in the same situations it's been used.
It's the same as waving at someone or bowing, it's respectful to their culture - she doesn't use it outside of those interactions. *Because it's a gesture related to that culture in particular.*

Alma is bae.
i think if you look at a game about hunting monsters and only recognize skin color and the difference in culture, you are the problem... its actually incredibly respectful to adapt cultural greetings, and such when in a different country. such as bowing in the east. even wearing the clothing of those cultures. its respectful, not problematic you twit
