<Monster Hunter Lore rant below>
All other complaints aside, Alma kinda *is* your boss. Lore of Monster Hunter establishes that the Guild isn't just an organization of hunters, but researchers, craftsmen, and even leaders. And at the Guild's creation, or at least the Hunter arm of it, the goal wasn't to exterminate monsters or hunt them at will, but to create a balance. Because, y'know, attempting to establish full control over nature led the ancient civilizations to calamity (read: a black dragon destroyed each of them. Don't believe me? Wilds itself establishes such with the Wyverian capital and Zoh Shia).
Hunters in Monster Hunter *aren't* Big Game Hunters. They're Park Rangers. Cull overpopulation problems, deal with especially aggressive predators, keep monsters from becoming disruptive to the locals, etc. Just because we, our specific character in our specific situation, is kinda OP from an in-world standpoint, doesn't change this.
It's the approval of the Guild that matters. Hunting without approval can have pretty serious repercussions. Just because Alma doesn't tell you this (because your character should automatically understand this, but it's never explained to the player), doesn't mean that she can't file a report with the Guild for unapproved hunting that at the least would earn a reprimand, could even potentially have the hunter's status as a hunter removed, or even get that hunter labeled a criminal.
And before anyone says "but we don't need permission in the earlier titles!", yes, you do. That's why you have to get hunts from the ladies at the counter, and don't just run off on your own.
If Guild approval wasn't necessary, then we'd be Monster Poachers, or maybe Monster Slayers.
Tidings lore accurate fan, and I am slightly aware of the Hunters Guild hierarchy and traditional values on the fragile ecosystem, but I'm still on the rails about this lady and her purpose.
Still, I feel like they need to cut out the middle man. Send me a messenger bird on important matters.
I'm just tired of Alma acting in my space. I like the solo hunter experience like the old days.
I am all for becoming a monster poacher/slayer, you make the concept sound enticing.
Guess what clown, you need ZERO approval for slaughter expeditions in World.
Even less so for the guiding lands.
World handler was 100x better than Alma.
Clown? Really? Alright then. Moving on.
First, Guiding Lands aside (I'll get to them in a moment), are any of the "slaughter expeditions" in World canon to the in-world events of what happen in that game? I mean, you don't expect our MH World Hunter characters to be able to claim having killed multiple Alatreon and Fatalis because we the players had to grind them for their armor and weapons, right? Hell, even World itself proves canon events are a thing when it claims Fatalis has never been seen since the fall of Schrade, despite the monster's appearance in other games.
Second, the settings for both World and Wilds, though admittedly to a slightly lesser extent for World, are areas uncontrolled and unclaimed by the Guild. Simply put, they don't have a full grasp on the region yet. So, things may slip through (like self-approving Wilds LR boss). Doesn't mean it couldn't be disapproved of by the Guild.
Third, the Guiding Lands in particular are a chaotic mess. Not only is that particular area a natural arena for conflict between monsters, something that the Guild would normally want their hunters to keep an eye on, but it's also somewhat isolated from the other parts of the New World. Wasn't part of the introduction of the Guiding Lands the higher ups of the 5th saying, basically, "Hey, this place is a problem."?
Ultimately, though, none of that matters for a single reason. Your handler in World is, during each and every one of these expeditions, in your camp, and you report back to her to get your rewards. Rewards given to you by the Guild (unless you think the reward at the end of a hunt, the non-carved drops, come from somewhere else?).
Which means, even if it was after the fact, the Guild *approved* of the hunt you reported.
No matter what you think of Alma as a character, or her implementation in the course of gameplay, neither of which I'll argue as it comes down to opinion, her job as a handler means she gives approval over a hunter's activities as a hunter. That's just the job.
