Kill or Capture
Which one is better? I know in World you could get more mats by capturing but maybe it's different now?

thoughts?

Capture gets you more rewards.

Although I am uncertain if you have to kill a monster for certain rewards. I don't think that's the case, but my paranoid ahh makes me think it matters.

with capturing you won't get some materials from monsters
for example you should break the jaw or cut off the tail and kill
and when you cut it up you will get some rare materials
you can look in the reference book what you need and then decide kill or catch

Menu -> Monster Field Guide -> Large Monster Field Guide -> select a monster -> RB/R1 to get to its drops -> A/X to enter menu and see % chances.
Items that appear as "target rewards" are dropped when capturing, and you get more target rewards when capturing.
Unlike Rise, it seems like capturing is probably superior once again (it's faster, of course). However, you may wish to forgo capturing a monster if your only chance at an item is from breaking a tail and you haven't got it yet, for example. For example, "Quematrice Tail" from HR Quematrice only has an 8% chance to drop as a target reward, but a 93% chance to get from carving its severed tail, so if that's what you need, you might choose not to capture the Quematrice in favor of trying to sever its tail. (If you succeed and it's still alive, you could then capture it if you wanted to anyway.)

Break, sever, then capture. Best way to get the most materials from a monster.
IF you need the mats, God knows the game is so easy most good players can finish it armorless.

the fun in the game is to kill monsters though. By the time you can capture it the condition being it has to be nearly dead anyway so why bother?

It isn't generally about "better" or "worse". They're mostly the same except some things are more common through capture and others through carves... on average.
Capturing ends the hunt sooner though... AND requires more awareness... AND requires less faffing about AFTER the hunt... so I always go for Capture where I can.
Plus I dunno if my Palico will get the ability to steal monster parts at any point.... but every time Palicos have been able to steal monster parts, they came from the Carve table... so Capturing balances out with that.

I'm not sure Wilds n00bs even know capturing is a thing though. They seem confused whenever I forcibly jump into the middle of their slashy fest at the first sign of a skull on the minimap and capture the monster.

Rise wasn't any different. That was just false controversy caused by Gaijin Hunter.
To clarify... there were a few monster parts that could be gained from Carves but not from Capture in Rise... however 100% of them were FAR more common from body part breaks, plus there were other parts that went the other way (possible from Capture but not Carves).... and Rise had slightly odds of getting super rares from Capture..... so Capture was still technically better than Kill then. It was an absolutely minuscule difference though.

Capture gets more reward... but specific drop is from carving so you really need to look for what you need in the book monster guide

Brake and severe everything you can then capture. Furthermore you can open wounds on certain locations only so many times. You can always brake the jaw or severe the tail. But Breaking the claws after that for example gets harder. Furthermore if you want to capture, look at the minimap for a skull symbol over the monster. If there is skull symbol on the minimap you can capture the monster.

The weapons have different specalities of course. A hammer will break parts, a blade will severe parts. You can go with a hammer and a longsword for example to get everything from a monster.

But compared to previous titles, the difference is not that big anymore between capturing and killing the monster.

It seems to be pretty equal this time around tbh. It's whether you want to finish the last 20% of the monsters hp bar or not.

I'll force a capture if it's something really dangerous like Tempered Veld/Gore and we only have one cart left and my team of randoms is especially clumsy.

it gets you around the same rewards in wilds.
Capturing guarantees you certain rewards. But if you need a claw, a tail or a jawbone the chance getting them without breaking or severing this parts is lowered if you simply capture the monster.

I havent seen a single guaranteed capture drop yet.
Capturing no longer gives extra rewards like in World/Iceborne, it's even now, the 3-4 "extra" rewards from Capping now is to equal out what you'd get from carves at the end of a hunt. So Kill v. Cap is purely up to target farming specific loot/time spent in hunt.

That said if you're a frequent SOS flyer, do please respect the wishes of the host who posted the hunt, thats always been etiquette but its worth stating with the huge surge of new players this time around.

Happy Hunting y'all
