First time player what the ♥♥♥♥ is up with whetstones?
Really, you have to sharpen your weapon IN combat?? What the ♥♥♥♥ is the purpose of that mechanic?

Could you even imagine the lunacy of that happening in combat.

It's been a long time mechanic in Monster Hunter. Stops you from just mindlessly wailing on the monster non-stop (IMO).

use your mount to sharpen on it that way are are still mobile while sharpening

So whetstones and the weapon sharpening system directly effect how much damage you do to monster and if you can cut them or if you hit just bounces off there hide doing minimal damage, along with that at higher tiers of weapons " blue and above" can increase your damage, maintaining your sharpness is pretty important as you don't want your attacks to bounce
Sharpening is basically weapon maintenance it's on every melee weapon even the Hammer and Hunting Horn. It's there because it provides damage scaling mechanics according to Sharpness Level.

if you find that sharpening is too slow catch Whetfish and used their scales instead. It's faster sharpening

Dont sharpen mid combat, duh! Youre not him, clearly

Be thankful you don't have to actually go out and mine the whetstone yourself anymore.

Use mount, sneak cloak, fish scales...
And maybe investigate before buying something if a mechanic can be such a problem for you because this has almost alway been in any MO games...

Like other people have said, sharpness = damage. As your weapon loses sharpness, certain levels of sharpness on certain monsters will cause it to bounce which isn't great

It adds some difficulty to the game, and its existed in MH games forever

Gotta choose the right times to stop and sharpen your weapon

This games mindless though you just mount your bird horse thing and run around in a circle till its done so I think its a bit stupid in this game tbh

Giant Monsters and Dinosaurs exist right. Its not about realism. Its a game mechanic.

OP doesn't even have the game

Could be an XGod or a Sony brony, considering the performance issues on PC.

Just be a badass and sharpen right in the monster's face to assert dominance
Imagine in older MH games when whetstones were consumibles.

not just consumable but also gathering spots don't respawn. If you somehow used up all your whetstones or god forbid didn't bring any, you were pretty much in for the long haul of bounce hell.

sharpening your weapons is like needing to reload your guns in a shooter.
