The Rally Against Gamers With Older Computers
Essay Start
A little context of my personal experience with this game. I believe I am one of the lucky ones who is able to enjoy this game without suffering from a poor performance. I have a 3070ti and a 13700kf. I can typically get around 120 fps with FG on. It’s not great, but it’s good enough. I must say however, I am firmly on the side of those who are having more issues and are complaining about the performance issues in this game.

One thing I have observed as the most common defense against those who are complaining is something like “your PC is old so obviously you won’t be able to run the game. Get an upgrade or stop complaining, pleb.” This strikes me as very interesting for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, one can label examples of games that also look stunning, perhaps even more so, but also manage to have better performance and fewer graphical bugs on their release. KCD2 comes to mind first. That game also has larger maps than this one and keeps larger areas loaded before de-rendering them. That being the case, it seems that capcom can do better. At least I would think they should do better than a company like Warhorse that has a fraction of the resources and an engine like CryEngine.

Secondly, I am old enough to remember that game developers usually received praise when they created a game that even those with lower-end pcs could run. And why shouldn’t they? After all, I would think that the lower-class gamers are not inherently bad people compared to those that can afford a 700+ GPU. Is it not a good thing that they could play the same game as you? I have seen plenty of defenders berate the complainers with statements like “haha you are poor and can’t run the game. Good riddance.” Are we really gonna pretend that being wealthier than others is something to gloat about in 2025? I for one still believe that a game being open to those with a tighter budget is a good thing as being on a budget doesn’t mean you’re a worse person.

In summary, it seems that to this fanbase it is no longer a good thing for developers to make their games more accessible to those on a tighter budget. I’m not sure when this development occurred as, until recently, developers were praised and encouraged to do so. KCD2 certainly received that praise. By this fandom’s standards that praise is irrelevant since impressive optimization is just a “bonus”.

(P.S I believe I need to say that I am not “poor” by any reasonable stretch of the imagination. It’s crazy that this qualifier is necessary in 2025 but it’s inevitable someone tries to say that in the replies without realizing the irony.)

ty ty. It seems that someone already gave me a jester without reading too just because of the title I suppose. Free points! Even though that's not what I'm after.

Capcom is infamous for making very bad pc ports. It happened with Dragon's Dogma 2 and it happened with MHWorld back in 2018, and from what I remember back then even 2016 gpus were struggling to run the game in a stable condition back then, whereas now it looks like anything older than a 2020 gpu is struggling, which is an improvement from Capcom, but still unacceptable.

Well let's start here, just because you think a game is doing more, looks more stunning, and "is larger" doesn't mean it is by any means lol

For starters kcd2 uses a form of 2D rendering techniques if you look closely at grass and tree leaves most everything in depth you'll notice it's 2D. Nothing wrong with this, it's actually pretty standard even good larger titles like Dark souls and eldin ring use this. Why? Because 2D rendering is far less intense and people don't pay that close attention usually.

While wilds here's uses 3D rendering for literally everything it seems, maybe they just wanted to push the envelope and this was it? Hard to say even the grass is 3D rendered which I think is silly lol but nifty.

I also find it commendable when a AAA dev makes sure as many people can play as possible. But the reality is at some point we all have to upgrade, I remember when my PC couldn't play Dragonage inquisition on launch, I was so disappointed. But I didn't go scream in the forums about how unoptimzied it was, I saved money to upgrade to play it lol

It always sucks when your PC reaches its limit in gaming. But it's gonna happen if not this game the next or eventually. Even at some point very likely in the far future the 5090 will be obsolete

I can see this reasoning. I agree that eventually we do have to upgrade. I still think that this game pushes things too much and from what I've seen most gamers are fine with games that don't have cutting edge graphics. I'm not sure you would agree but the demand (and supply) for evermore sophisticated graphics seems misguided.

i mean its a coin flip, i didnt have problem with any of the newest RE games on day 1, dmc5, kunitsu gami
4070 can at least be usable for games like 5 years. 8 might be a stretch, but that was how long my last pc lasted. and a whole pc is like 2000usd for 5 years. that is 400usd in a year. at least that is how much i paid for my 4070 pc. if you can't save up 400usd/year, you should just get a console.

The reality isnt that gamers stopped caring about optimization and they hate people with mid range tech. The reality is that the lowest common denominator average ass intelligence human is going to say whatever suits their desires. Most people start with the conclusion and work back from there. When the game industry was a little more pro consumer it was seen as a good thing that games ran on lower end tech or were very optimized, so the fans of those games talked about it. Now that the same standard isnt being met and poor optimization and the abuse of DLSS and framegen to make up for bad optimization is the norm they attack the idea that it matters. Why? Because now its a valid criticism of something they like and they start with the conclusion which for them is the game is good it has to be! and work back...so now its not a sign of quality its the gamers fault. Most people operate like this mentally in everything in their lives. Saying get better tech is a bad faith intellectually dishonest argument that people make because they have an agenda to make the game look better than it is. Excellent essay and I applaud your thought out post but there is literally zero reason to debate with the lowest common denominator because their ideas arent their own too often and they only see what they want to. They are for lack of a better word stupid. You will not convince stupid people no matter how much evidence, no matter how reasonable your are, no matter how sound your logic is.

If your PC is more than 5 years old, you are officially NOT part of the PC MASTER RACE. Period!

Sadly I don’t disagree with you. Really I just wanted to get my thoughts out there regardless. It means little to me how much interaction this post manages to get and how often it gets bumped

I agree that it should run a lot better than it does right now, but still most of the "upgrade your pc" comments are to gtx 1060, 1650 and 1660 and whatever, even if one of these is at the "minimum requirements" which in practice they don't run the game good at all, I think people that have these GPUs should realize they're quite outdated not just for this game.

Well put. Honestly I suggest people research the term. ," confirmation bias." We all fall for it but it can help a lot of people from making arguments that make no sense. Like the ," it works for me so it can't be a real issue" people.
not wanting to keep up with the most expensive and recent hardware doesn't make you poor, and not everyone is living in US and making 120k every year. people with mid or low end hardware shouldn't buy this game even if it is "playable" for them (by using FG)
