Where can I find whoppers?

According to a guide they show up in area 17 of the forrest but It feels like hours have passed by and I checked after a few hunts but no fish show up. Are there any other places to catch whoppers besides area 17?

zone 12 under the wumps has a large pool that refreshes often with large fish, 17 like you said also has them but also has a lot of things for them to get stuck on so its a bit iffy imo.

if you want to refresh a zone, leave it entirely , go to the oil then return as example.

im not sure if it was circumstance or not but those big pools of active fish im *pretty sure* can also just spawn bit fish to bite at your hook, so if you ever see those you can try as well, if you see no other large fish, but the large fish could have also been hidden in the animation, so im not 100% sure

the most i have found are in the giant lake at the top of the forest, ive seen like 3 tuna and 2 swordfish at one time there once, watch for the bubbling spot that the wingdrakes are diving into. I think they can spawn anywhere fish can spawn but thats always got the most ive seen (the fish are spread around the lake randomly without bubbles but will beeline to the bubbles when it is there, easier to catch them)

its possible the weather affects it but not sure yet

I am not even seeing that swarm of fish in the water or the birds that swoop down to catch them.

theres no good answer man, they are not there 100% of the time. try resting in your tent to reset the area, check in different weather like downpour and plenty, or just sit and wait around for a while. if you do see fish, catch them with the rod and new ones will spawn to take their place
like i said it doesnt matter if the schooling fish are there, it just makes it easier to see the other fish because they go towards it, if you walk back and forth along the shore you should be seeing at least a few. they can be somewhat deep under the water (and very far away from the shore) so sometimes it can be hard to spot them

Well good news I am finding them now but bad news is they somehow get away.

big fish angling 101,

dont pull rod to opposite direction of fish traveling like normal angling, only do it little bit if the fish heading to rocks, rocks can break line.

first thing on mind, just let it go, fish will stop to take a breather, during that spam W/S to reel in ,congratz you got a large fish. if you havent then repeat again, it ll get closer and closer to shore.

there s also the jumping, but with first rule on mind again, just press LMB when fish is on air. thats all.
