As for fishing itself, make sure to use bait if you have it and just keep trying. Move it to the right, to the left, tug it, reel it in slowly and then fast, if you keep doing all the moves the fish will eventually bite. Eventually.
I found that out the hard way....
Cast the line near them (Doesn't have to be infront of them.)
Tap the stick back and to the side, this jigs the line and causes vibration in the water. Generally this is enough to gauge interest from the fish, but sometimes it doesn't. So, up, then down pulls it towards you. Do this a few times and you'll get a bite. Fish are stubborn in Wilds though, especially some of the whoppers, it's just about patience.
Basically they should change the icon to a circle, and put slow or fast in it.
That's the way how to get bigger fish, which you can't catch with the net.
The fish that you can get just with the net, well just try getting with the net, the fish don't scare off anymore when you fish with the net.
Unless you need them for a quest.
Otherwise yeah bait/lure is what matters.
Anyway good luck actually catching a big boy.
That's the hardest part for me in this game, compared to FFXV, this is way way harder.
if the fish is swimming to the side just point in that direction until their tired then reel them in by repeatedly spamming the two keys and repeat
the jumping fish take a bit more
But yeah up and down fast is basically fast rotation.
But doing slowly up and down does not match up with slow reeling, it breaks instead.
