What does the Blast skill do? It just says applies Blast buildup.

Well an early encounter says getting hit with blast buildup in a short time can cause an explosion.

its a status that causes an explosion with a set amount of damage. so if you keep hitting the monster it applies blast build up and eventually it'll explode and do extra damage.

Blast is a status effect along the lines of paralysis or poison. The blast skill increases the rate at which the status effect accumulates until it triggers to an active state. Where paralysis paralyzes the monster, sleep puts it to sleep, and poison, well, poisons the monster, blast is just front loaded damage. Once it triggers the monster suffers a large amount of immediate damage. The blast skill just makes it easier to build up that status effect rate to the trigger point.

Look for monsters that blastblight you. Their weapons should have it.

There's a blast icon that looks like an explosion. Anytime that's next to a weapon, it has blast.

This is a nice effect to have on a Palico weapon. The monster will just occasionally explode.

After you kill the Ajarakan in Chapter 2, their weapons provide blast buildup. I know the dual blades, sword & shield, hunting horn, gunlance, insect glaive, and the light blowgun have the blast effect.
