No, you don't need to put it away, most weapons still have some mobility to it or you could also hid the head for a while if you don't want to move away. If you don't feel like putting effort into learning how to position yourself properly with heavy weapons, then maybe try something more agile like insect glaive or dual baldes.
Rather call your saikret and use potions there. You're not only safer due to being faster, but you can more easily get back into the fight, maybe even mounting the monster. Calling it should be a reflex after getting slaped onto the ground anyway, since it's the overall savest option to recover from a strong hit.
It's called consequences. If you don't want to heal that much, then don't get hit in the first place. That's a quite strong motivation for most people, at least for those who've ambitions.
Alternatively you could also use other forms of healing, like plant in the environment, your cat sometimes uses healing stuff or you could use the healing bombs. All of these take less time, but pay that convenience in other forms for obvious reasons.
Many new players feel that way in the beginning. I also though it was too slow, but once i got better, the amount of heals i needed got reduced very quickly, at which point it feels more reasonable to have these healing pauses. It also allows you to reset your mind a littlebit, restore some concentration and to evaluate the situation. You'll eventually find it much easier to fight monsters, if you're not constantly trying to hug them while getting pushed into a corner you can't properly move in.
And i feel a littlebit old saying that, but: Back in the days we didn't had a seikret getting us into a safe distance while drinking potions. Wilds is probably the best time to start as a beginner due to how many QoL-features it has^^
wen gathering just use your hookshot its alot quicker
when using items like health pots make use of you item weels or if ur on keybored and mouse the item weels are you 1 -9 keys bind important items there in a easy to reach place will make things alot better and smoother
