Monster Hunter Wilds
I highly recommend treating this game like anime.
It's a Japanese game. Put the voice lines in Japanese. The English VAs, in my opinion, sound too much liked dubbed anime. Some are better than others. Overall it's average to mid. It's hammy, cartoonish, and put on. Nata is exceedingly annoying in English. In Japanese he's just a lost and confused boy with trauma.

The body language and gesturing the characters do makes more sense in Japanese, especially if you've learned a bit of the language. I dunno. This is an anime video game to me. Put it in the language of the country in which it was made. The subtitling could be better than just the English voice track in text format since there are differences in what some lines actually say but it's not major. For your ears and the expression of the characters' personalities, try it in JP.

I won't get into the subs vs dubs debate. I clearly think subs are superior. If you're of the same mentality as I am, play this game in "subs." It improved my experience of World immensely (I think the Handler is cute and adorable in JP; her EN version is gratingly annoying). I believe it makes Wilds better too.

Wait, so the japanese script is less ridiculous?
bro i dont play a game to read text at the bottom of my screen every 2 seconds to understand whats going on
Yeah I cringe whenever I hear English dubs of Japanese stuff. It's almost always terrible. I'm thinking of changing the language to German or Italian after I finish the game though.

Yes, absolutely. But to really pick up on it you'll need some Japanese knowledge. Moments like where the elder tells Nata to "be strong" in English, he actually says "...Live!!" before shutting the boulder. It has better dramatic weight in lots of places. The story centers around what the localizers call "Wylk." In Japanese it's "Ryuunyuu" - "dragon's milk." Things like that give the game a bit more weight and interest. Some of it is very Japanese and idiomatic so wouldn't translate well, but it hits harder all the same.

They did the whole Disney-Ghibli subtitling practice here (the subs are actually just the English dialogue not actual translations of the Japanese), but if you know what they're actually saying you can look past it. I'm hoping a modder might put in better subtitling when we figure out how to mod this thing. Hell, I might even take on the task myself if I ever figure out how. Still, even without any Japanese knowledge, the characters sound more adult and "put together" than whatever the f*ck anime dubs nonsense the localizing team came up with.

I know I'm a bit late for this discussion, but yes there's actually a lot missing in the English version of these games for example rathalos parts are written as red flying wyvern rather then ratholas gem. And the lore books (yes there are official lore books Capcom makes) are told from a in universe person perspective which is lost in translation to English.
idk if this is the right way to view it but its like watching england vtubers and feeling cringe when they tolk all kawaii but it doesnt feel as cringe when its in joponese, whether thats to due a degree or seperation or something else idk

The language that the voice actors use in games does matter very much. People who say it doesn't should watch the youtube video of starfox 64 comparing the jp and english dubs. The tone changes dramatically.
Japanese anime voice actors actually don't speak like real japanese people, same for western dubs, it's why it sounds artificial and not like people would actually talk in real life, though japanese just are used to it because it's part of the style of the media and they usually don't have a choice to watch/play in another language.

Of course it it's still the same language that the characters speak, but the tone, choice of words and mostly important the pronunciation and the way the words flow is completely different from real life. You can immediately hear the difference if you watch a serious drama live action movie in japanese, since it's much closer to real japanese.

Is that not obvious...?
This is a game made by a japanese studio? Of course it's going to be better VA'd in the native language. Being a japanese game hardly makes it an "anime" game...

I would say that argument is made for westerners for easier understanding.

A lot of players - no - I have yet to see a player here on Steam forums who understood the story the way I did, with the classic references to the post WWII era. Nearly all just compare it with Jurassic Park for reasons.
Ya, i play with japanese dub and english sub, the amount of poorly translated lines is baffling

I mean at some point it gets kinda repetetive pointing out that someone from japan (add media here) 'sneakily' added allusions to ww ii. Although I also have yet to see anyone recognize that final fantasy 8 alludes to ww II especially more on the nose when laguna was in his literal monster hunter phase showing an empty europe like in ww ii. I do believe some monster hunter weapons are named laguna huh...
The English dub is just there for children who have not learnt how to read yet.
