is there an indicator when you can not capture a monster?

Not talking about the skulls, i know about that.

If its not capturable for story reasons for example.

odogaron was not capturable, i guess due to what happened afterwards

Its kinda easy to know, when you notice it, on the right side (quest) there seems to be three stats, Hunt, Slay, Capture.

"Hunt the Chatacabra" - you can both kill and capture
This is the common one, you will see 99% of the time

"Slay the Chatacabra" - you can only kill it
Certain monster(s) you cannot capture due to reasons

"Capture the Chatacabra" - you can only capture it
Think i only seen this one on side quest
It used to be that certain materials could only be carved and others could only be received from captures. The drop chances for materials were also different between carving and capturing. No idea if they've changed this in Wilds.

odogaron is capturable. What happens is a tranq bomb misses, or it was too healthy. Odogaron might have limped, but it got to eat somthing or heal a little and then it was above the threshold. Might also be that it built up high trap resistance, and it broke free or somthing
hi man , if the monster goes to his place and sleep does he recover his hp back again?

Far as I’m aware the answer is yes, they do gain some hp but it’s not much. If it wasn’t far below the capture threshold though you may need to hit em a few times before tranqs work again.

This question is so old - it makes me feel young again.

Tip: check the Monster guide - with the % chances for drops. You can find there in detail the difference of % chances for capture vs kill and looting.
there's also the rare 'repel the monster'. this tends to only get applied to stronger monsters and your goal is just kind of beating it up until it leaves. Sometimes you can get a kill if you work real hard but it's on kind of a quest-by-quest basis.

they heal just a little bit, I think its like how hunters have a red portion of their HP that can return. They cannot fully heal or significantly heal.

Capture will get you more materials.

Im pretty sure thats false.

It use to be that certain parts were rolled on different tables and so sometimes capturing gave a better chance (or sometimes only chance) to get specific parts.
It is not false
Oh boy, time for the capture/kill controversy to start up on yet another monster hunter game!
I just tried some capture expeditions, its just 3 rewards now, its the same as the three carves. The reward pool is prob still different.
I capture only Xu Wu so i can live out my hentai fantasies when we are finally allowed to bring captured monsters into the wounded hollow
capture saves time, kill spends more time because monster tend to go super enrage when they're about to die. Doesn't really effect the material you got. You get more material when you make more wounds on the monster and successfully doing focus strike on them.
capture and kill have different chances for different parts as far as testing has proven, you have the same chance to get extra parts on both, the reason you would be better off killing is that the main way to get extra parts is wounds, and more fighting means more wounds

By the time you can capture, you should've wounded the monster all that you can anyway.
