Capture will get you more materials.

Some quests require one or the other.

This is basically it. Some materials also have higher chances from capture as opposed to carve, if this is like the old games.

once you get further in the game, it becomes more and more imperative to prepare for captures and you end up capturing 95% of your kills

Im pretty sure thats false.

It use to be that certain parts were rolled on different tables and so sometimes capturing gave a better chance (or sometimes only chance) to get specific parts.

is there an indicator when you can not capture a monster?

Not talking about the skulls, i know about that.

If its not capturable for story reasons for example.

odogaron was not capturable, i guess due to what happened afterwards

not too sure here, but typically, there is 1 more reward if capture, vs kill. ( 3 carves vs 4 extra capture rewards)This was world. I think rise changed it, both were equal.

Besides this, capture saves time and the reward pool is slightly different. Some parts have higher drop chance if capture vs carve. These are for things like wing talons or fangs, not really for gems or plates, those are always super low. Should be a wiki that will clear this all up eventually.

odogaron is capturable. What happens is a tranq bomb misses, or it was too healthy. Odogaron might have limped, but it got to eat somthing or heal a little and then it was above the threshold. Might also be that it built up high trap resistance, and it broke free or somthing

If the quest says "hunt" it means you can capture or kill. If it says something else, you do something else. The first odogaron you see is a "slay" quest, so you can't capture it and yes, it's because of what happens afterwards in the cinematics.

The field guide used to explain the carving vs capturing drop rate but currently only shows the carving rate, so I'm unsure how capturing changes the drop rates outside of simply removing carving from the table. It feels like in certain cases this alters the chances of what you get when you capture but nothing in the game seems to indicate exactly what is different.

Considering this is the first time I've played a MonHun game that *didn't* have a "retrieve an egg" an "capture the monster" quest in the first 2 hours, it seems they're really switching things up this time.

To recap - in World capturing was ALWAYS better. The rewards for capturing were the same as the rewards for carving, you just got more rolls by capturing.
I believe it's the same in Wilds though I'm not positive.
More Mats, better quality mats.

Some rare stuff you can only get, or have a higher chance to get, by capturing

"When can you NOT capture?"
It will say "slay" on the top right. When you try to capture, the monster will just not sleep to tranqs.
If it says "hunt" you can kill or capture.
i just dont like how when u capture something and its your session, if you wait long enough the monster wakes up and just walks away like nothing happened wtf

also u cant see last captured mon in ur base like in world REEEEEEE
