Nvidia/Linux users - readme for decent performance
I was able to get decent performance with proton-experimental and the pyroveil vulkan layer that roundtrips the shaders via SPIRV-cross to glsl; the source can be found here [github.com], from the same dev who created the vkd3d pipeline for proton.

Pair the pyroveil vulkan layer with proton-experimental and it seems to give the best results, I've seen some users report proton-9 works as well(on protondb)

## I need to preface these instructions with two big warnings if you decide to try this yourself:

  • You may run out of denuvo activation tickets(5 per 24 hours) if you tinker around with different variables like I did; which(for those unfamiliar) - will "soft-ban" your account from starting the game you just paid $60 for until 24 hours after the first activation(the first time you launched the game and compiled the shaders) - obligatory ♥♥♥♥ you to Denuvo.

  • Between each attempt you need to go into the install directory($HOME/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/MonsterHunterWilds/ or wherever you chose to install the game to) and delete vkd3d-proton.cache && vkd3d-proton.cache.write inside of your games install folder.(right click the game -> properties -> view game files)

  • follow the instructions in the github repository to build the pyroveil layer(after ensuring you have the pre-requisite deps), and after compiling you can move the ./hacks/monster-hunter-wilds-nv/pyroveil.json wherever you want, but you must point to it in your steam launch arguments with the absolute path . The launch argument should look something like:

    PYROVEIL=1 PYROVEIL_CONFIG=/home/user/pyroveil/hacks/monster-hunter-wilds-nv/pyroveil.json %command%

    I was able to test GE-Proton24 and GE-Proton25 briefly. however each session ended up crashing under heavy load and seemed to just run a bit worse than proton-experimental in general. I'd recommend sticking to Steam's proton-experimental or proton-9.0.4

    This is only the results of the limited testing I was able to do before the denuvo soft-ban however so while I can attest to proton-experimental and pyroveil working the best I wasn't able to get any conclusive results before being banished to the shadow realm by Denuvo's anti-tamper.

    I'm interested to see how this works for y'all; replies(both negative and positive) after attempting the above would be helpful.

    and my inxi -G just if you want to compare your setup to mine
