I would just go for the one that you prefer or think of as being cool.
They're all different, try them all, you're never locked into the weapon choice you picked, you can always change it around whenever you want.
Try them all, then settle with the one that best suits your playstyle.
Personally I enjoy Lance + Light Bowgun
A common combo is a greatsword and a hammer; similar playstyles, but one is sharp and can sever parts and cut right through soft-skinned creatures, while the other can crack armor plates on parts that can't really be cut.
Alternatively, take a ranged weapon as your back-up if your primary is melee; some enemies spend almost their entire time in the air, and you can only bring so many flashbombs with you to knock them out of the sky.
It simple to learn. But play around with the weapons. It just takes time.
Also i'd consider your 2nd weapon to be range (mine bow). Sometimes distance is just your friend.
