Can't do storyline quests as a group?

Myself and my friends are trying to play through the storyline together and due to how the game is paced it seems like that is impossible. You have to follow breadcrumbs in the form of small mission between the hunts then when you finish the trail it leads straight into the next hunt. This means there is no chance to start the missions together and progress as a team.

Are we doing something wrong? Or is this seriously a case of you have to beat a monster once solo before you can fight it with your friends?

Each of you have to solo the quest but when you get to the actual fight, you should get auto invites to join each other so one person needs to accept it.

Once you each get the cutscene introducing the monster run away from it and then your friends should be able to join you from their invitations screen as long as you’re in a link party

Unfortunately, no. They still decided to go through with the annoying restriction.
