Similar to tv cartoons then... woke was there before people realised woke existed.
The androgynous trans character Erik, strong females everywhere, white dudes relegated to secondary roles, dei whining kid at the center of the storyline...etc
Definitely woke. Imma put the game to the side until mods come out and I can replace all those characters with modded characters that are not dei garbage.
If those mods don't come out, well, there are plenty of other games to play.
This is irrelevant.
The company is WOKE and ESG compliant, therefore every Shekel that is destined to such Corpos does ultimately finance the elitary overlords in Davos and BlackRock's board. Woke will become more subtle until the next wave of government tyranny and collective degeneracy hits us. KCD2 is a perfect example for this. Honestly, great game and loved it 95% of the time, but there were 3-4 situtations were thez implemented some outrageous woke garbage and got away with it. My conclusion for 2025: No new buys, only piracy.
It feels like the developers were stuffed into the woke box but made the best out of it they could. There aren't any degrading scenes insulting male intelligence or having men seem wildly stupid (that I saw, at least). If you're a male MC, you actually give fatherly-seeming advice to the kid. They gave the MC voice lines, and they seem pretty direct and stoic, not a comic caricature of a male as per usual nowadays.
The ridiculously racist idea that people with darker skin have no ability to empathize with people whose skin color isn't the same as theirs is a little wedged in. There's a definite noticeable imbalance in skin color, but the devs just plopped the game into a desert/middle eastern/indian/ weird sometimes wuxia-vibe land. Again, feels like they just had to work with what was forced on them.
Both germanic dudes being oddly autistic mad scientists was an interesting choice. Not sure what the thought process was there, exactly. I don't think that's 'woke' but uh, it's something.
I just assume every game is going to have bad english VA at this point, so I had the voices in JP. I didn't see any insane zoomer modern-language or excessively lazy translation. That's the worst kind of woke parasitism in the industry imo, as it can destroy a good game if you can't read other languages.
I did skip a lot of the cutscenes- so keep that in mind. Once things started sliding into just generic bad monster hunter writing I passed it over. Woke is present, but at semi-tolerable levels. Doesn't seem nearly as badly infected as it could have been. Shouldn't be here at all, but I'm here for monster hunter, and this has good monster hunter content.
Kinda reminds me of Tyler Durden
As someone who has played almost all monster hunters since release and even went out of their way to buy whatever console they usually would be coming out on I can tell you right now having women in leadership roles is and was nothing new.
However here we are in a new frontier meaning a whole new region so they can create do many things different if they want. Does not make it woke, sure wokes want that win so they are seeking it but no does not make it woke.
Erik while he does look to have some feminine features is fully male, one hundred % male, not a trans or any of that nonsense. While technically new by monster hunter standards the way most of these characters look in the new monster hunter is pretty solid I would say that is just engine allowing better details. But this is a Japanese game and Erik fits the typical pretty boy who is young and soft trope you see in many Japanese stuff.
Strong females have ALWAYS been part of the Monster Hunter Universe, they are freaking hunters, one of the more famous ones is from MH4, MHGen, who also is present in monster hunter animated show, The Ace Gunner Nadia. Olivia is the first NPC female hunter in mainstream game to actually use a heavy weapon, The Hammer in this specific case, All other female hunters have been using either lighter weapons ( Sword and Shield, Dual Blades, Bows, Bowguns, Insect Glaive, Lances )
Let me clarify and say I was someone who was super hyped about DAFailguard when it was announced back as dreadwolf, I stayed away from that game because it looked bad and do not like or enjoy preachy woke bs in my hobbies or games.
This game is fine, it is not woke. Just having different skin colors or some women in leadership positions does not make something all of a sudden woke, this is nothing new to monster hunter games.
The fact those sorts of things are focused on over larger concepts like human trafficking or actual genocide etc could be why it nearly classifies as woke, but I think the fact that within the Monster Hunter-verse, characters would absolutely be focused on micro-level survival, it wouldn't be an issue stemming from them refusing to be compassionate for larger causes, over things that align with their own identity, and validate them.
That distinction (wokeness that isn't 1st world narcissistic wokeness, and is dealing with things that could instantly wipe out societies, usually culminating in a world ending boss all groups unite to prepare the hunter for) is why it fits within the world and doesn't qualify as non-fiction woke. Real life "wokeness" is absolutely self-focused, masquerading as outward-focused, but the characters in the game are making entire continents safe / inhabitable by assimilating new cultures and technology, so "Monster Hunter wokeness" would technically be the authentic wokeness or "peak wokeness" the real life narcissistic versions should be striving for...ironic since its a fantasy setting.
But the "wokeness" in Monster Hunter has an actual impact on the internal worlds that helps societies, instead of dividing them, and actually makes the large-scale changes it claims / promises to, from what I've seen unfold in these games over many years. Real-life wokeness is just power play rhetoric, and societal debate semantics to fill in for a lack of a personality, sadly.
The game largely lets you do whatever you want. There's pretty people and ugly people. The game isn't sexualized because the story doesn't call for it to be.
This whole "woke or not woke" ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is a symptom of chronic online-ness; take a page from the game and go outside into nature.
