Gore Magala isn't an Elder Dragon?
If I'm understanding Elders correctly, they're basically "we can't classify this." monsters. So, someone saw Gore Magala and goes "yep. I know how to classify this 6 limbed monstrosity. But that gold one it molted into? Miss me with that ♥♥♥♥"

Correct. Gore is just weird and doesn't fall into any of the established classifications, it can molt Into an Elder Dragon, Elder Dragons are just a special class that Cannot be Captured, so the fact Traps work on Gore and don't work on Shaguru is kind of the differentiating factor there.

Sure from a gameplay perspective, but lore wise. By not falling into any established classifications, shouldn't that make it an Elder? Or is there another "cannot be classified" category?

Lore wise its kind of the same I believe. In lore Elders are not capturable, they don't even try anymore cause of how badly it goes( to even try. So the fact a small hunting team(Or solo hunter) can capture Gore, makes it not an Elder, so they're all just really confused.

It by all means Should be an Elder, but you can capture it, so its not an Elder, but its not like any other monster. Gore is just weird like that.

The way I've always seen it, Gore Magala is a weirdo freakydeaky plague-bringing dragon, but is still capturable and defeatable by normal hunters. Elder Dragons are generally synonymous with calamities and widespread, continent-changing destruction -- something that can just naturally destroy and reshape the land as it moves. Gore can cause a ton of damage, but doesn't gain that insane world-shaping strength until it molts into Shagaru Magala, so it technically isn't an Elder.
Poor Gore, out here trying his best. He's just a baby!
