They can be automatic but no, they're not instant. Per Valve's FAQ approved refunds take up to 7 days to disappear from your library which lines up with my own experience. Funds take 48 hours to appear on your wallet. other payment methods may take up to 30 days.

not even securom or starforce, which supposedly would nuke my dvd drive the instant i put a game in it.
