For the most part, picking a weapon you like and learning how to use it, its pros and flaws, and knowing how aggressive you can afford to be with it and when to back off will get you most of the way.
The next thing you want is to find what skills fit your play style. If they come already equipped on armor or if you need decorations to fill in spots, and what size you need to fit them. Do you want damage skills, survival, or some QoL like quick sheath, and figure out what combination of armor and decos allow for it.
Learn a monster's attack patterns, their element weakness, and where to strike them, whether it's the head or another part that prevents certain attacks.
Make sure you are well stocked with items before going in.
And lastly, just time and experience.
