Random Freezes in Monster Hunter Wilds after Upgrading from RTX 2060 to RTX 5060 Ti (Sound Continues, Crash Report Points to sl.dlss_g.dll) – Not Tech-Savvy
Hi everyone,
I'm experiencing random freezes in Monster Hunter Wilds (PC, Steam) where the game locks up, but the sound keeps playing. I get a crash report pointing to sl.dlss_g.dll with an Access Violation error (C0000005). I recently upgraded my GPU from an RTX 2060 to an RTX 5060 Ti, and I’m not sure if the issue is related to the new GPU, its drivers, or the game itself. I’m not very tech-savvy, so I’m hoping for simple, easy-to-follow advice from the community.
System Specs:
GPU: NVIDIA RTX 5060 Ti (recently installed, upgraded from RTX 2060)

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X

RAM: 32 GB (not sure about XMP status, likely enabled)

OS: Windows 11

NVIDIA Driver: 576.40 (clean install via DDU, also tried older versions like 551.23)

Crash Details:
Crash report mentions sl.dlss_g.dll and sl.common.dll.

Exception code: C0000005 (Access Violation).

Freezes happen randomly, no specific trigger (e.g., during hunts, exploration, or menus).

Example callstack: sl.common.dll -> sl.dlss_g.dll -> ucrtbase.dll -> KERNEL32.DLL -> ntdll.dll.

What I've Tried:

Disabled DLSS Frame Generation and tested with DLSS off entirely (also tried FSR 3).

Clean-installed NVIDIA drivers using DDU (tried 576.40 and older versions like 551.23).

Verified game files via Steam.

Deleted shader.cache2 in the game folder.

Despite these steps, the freezes keep happening. I’m wondering if the RTX 5060 Ti, its drivers (576.40), or the upgrade process is causing this, or if it’s a game bug (maybe after the Spring Festival Update). Has anyone with a similar setup (especially RTX 5060 Ti users or those who upgraded from RTX 2060) faced this? Can you suggest simple steps to try, since I don’t know much about technical stuff? Should I try an even older driver, or is this likely a game issue?
Thanks so much for any help! I posted this in r/pcmasterrace but only got one reply, so I’m hoping for more ideas here.

If there was a "pcmasterrace" you would have been helped much faster...

That put aside, your idea of reverting the driver was already very good. It might just be a tad too old. Try one which is newer

RTX 5060ti can't use Driver 572.83 Becase It not support New GPU RTX 5060ti
However RTX 5060ti can use Driver 573.04 (Vulkan 1.4 Developer Beta Driver)
https://developer.nvidia.com/vulkan-driver

I tried this driver, and then the game never crashed again.

Other than that, based on your description you did everything correct.

1. sl.dlss_g.dll -> points directly towards a driver issue

2. using DDU for a clean uninstall and then install

3. deleting shader.cache2 file

I would add

4. to delete the config.ini file as well, so the game "forgets about the faulty driver".

Considering you are using a Ti version, which often come overclocked,

5. try running the GPU in debug mode and check if the overclocking is an issue.

6. XMP can cause issues, so it is worth trying with having it off at first

If the issue persists share a DxDiag report
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2831340548

But so far you are on the right track in isolating and then addressing the issue. :MHRISE_OK:

Last but not least, considering the

Exception code: C0000005 (Access Violation).

Make sure to run Steam & the game in admin mode. Do you know how to set it up, by going to the Steam folder and right click on the Steam.exe setting it in compatibility tab to run as admin?

Same for the game file.

Hey, thanks for the quick and detailed reply! I really appreciate your help. I checked, and my RTX 5060 Ti isn’t overclocked. I’ve tried all your suggestions (running as admin, deleting config.ini, closing background programs, and reinstalling the game), but the freezes still happen. I also disabled XMP in the BIOS, as you recommended, and confirmed it’s off, but no luck.
I read in some Steam threads and X posts that others are having similar crashes since the Spring Festival Update, especially with the RTX 5060 Ti. There are also reports that the RTX 5060 Ti has general stability issues with some games. I’m thinking it might be best to wait for new NVIDIA driver updates or patches for Monster Hunter Wilds to fix this. Do you know if Capcom or NVIDIA are working on anything specific for these crashes? Should I keep trying other drivers (like 573.04), or just wait?

Considering other players have success with the 573.04 driver, it is worth a shot.

Capcom itself seems not working to address any issue in that regards, since it is no Capcom but an Nvidia issue. Nvidia has announced to be working on that, acknowledging it is an issue with their latest drivers.

So I would give the mentioned 573.04 a try.

How old is your Windows installation? Did you also do the maintenance commands to make sure that everything is on order? It would not hurt either to use these in terminal as admin

winget upgrade --all
sfc /scannow
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /AnalyzeComponentStore
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /StartComponentCleanup
chkdsk /f /r

576.02 is the oldest driver you can use, try that if you can.

The error is coming from nvidia streamline components. You've already tried disabling DLSS/FG and using something else or no AA at all. You can try replace streamline files for updated ones from nvidia's Github repo.

Do you get any other issues at all in other games? Especially UE5 games. Debug mode should rules out GPU unless it is faulty.

See my earlier post about replacing nvidia streamline files. The zip with the binaries are now at https://github.com/NVIDIA-RTX/Streamline/releases download the streamline-sdk-xxx.zip

That does sound like the Nvidia driver instability.

Question:
Can you try to play with capped 30fps and no DLSS fpr a while and see if it solved it for you? Since many reports about such issues seem to be DLSS and framegen related.
