Or maybe replace the longsword option with GS for real wakeups
If the question was "as a Longsword player what should my secondary weapon be?" I'd say another Longsword.
Just bring a Paralysis Version of the same weapon type in the secondary slot, open with it then swap once the monster changes areas. Then you can have a Hammer/Para Hammer, SnS/Para SnS, and Longsword/Para Longsword sets.
Edit:
Regarding elements not being that good, it's confirmation bias. The hit zone values for element aren't that bad, problem is that building for Element requires different skills and more weapons, plus Raw Crit Meta is easy to set up. Burst+Element Attack+Critical Element (if you have affinity) is pretty solid. If the hitzone values aren't bugged, a 160 Raw/140 Element Slashing weapon on a Rathian on average would require a 191 Raw weapon to break even. This is before skills are taken into account.
Have you try applying oil to your SNS?

Great Sword is the correct choice.
Personally I use Dual Blades as my Secondary, when playing Sword and Shield. Just personal preference.
For me, I have Max Might so using something that drains stamina (like DB or Bow) is a no-go. I have HBG currently as a secondary (machinegun goes burrrr) but I like Evade Extender with it which is useless for SnS. I'll probably change it for LBG for general use or GS for the surprise birthday parties.
If you truly wanted to min-max and do the most damage, element is the way to go. At least in this game. Again though, you would need to swap to specific gear sets for each monster you fought. Some would have overlap at least, but it would still be a lot of sets to make.
