Are there any sleep guides?
I set a trap but I don't know how many sleep bombs to throw. Sometimes it's 2, sometimes 3.

it's always 2
If you threw 3, then you've missed one. It's always best to take a few extras just for that alone, especially when you throw them before setting up the trap.
Tranq ammo is nice if you are using a bowgun.

I played a lot of rise and never missed there, but here I throw 3 pieces point-blank to the monster.

From my experience (90 hours Wilds and ~200 hours in World) it's always 2 tranq bombs. If you need more than that, you definetely missed one. Remember to use them at their head. BUT you are not limited to the "throw to ground" tranq bombs and the ammo for the bowgun. You can combine throwing knives with tranq bombs to get Tranq ammo for your slinger. My strategy is follow the monster to their nest when they are almost dead and shoot 2 slinger tranqs at them (doesnt matter where you hit them) and when they lay down to sleep place the trap under them. They should be caught immediately.

Now I tried it on an octopus, it doesn’t work at all.

maybe the duration ran out before it got to your trap?

put the trap first let it trigger then throw the 2 bomb at its feet

I did it three times, it didn't work. There were 2 of my traps + a palico. It was an additional task from the NPC, maybe that's the problem?

Xu Wu on difficulty 5. The icon has 3 stars and a sword drawn on it.
19k gold, rank 21.

is the quest name "Astonishing Adaptability" under optional quest?

if it says "slay" xu wu then you cant capture it
Use tranq knives

I took the quest from the NPC, where the task of defeating the monster appears. It is also highlighted with a yellow icon.

Yes, it says only murder. That was probably the problem. There is also a hunting option. It will probably work here.
try converting your tranq bmbs into tranq Knives, amight be easier for your to make sure you hit them. also, tranque first and trap or trap and tranq after, they both work. you can tranq, trap and tranq if you want.
